Yuan Guang–Arc relationship

Gunsoul

The Yuan Guang–Arc relationship turns a hard-won apprenticeship into a lasting source of direction: Arc teaches Yuan Guang how to cultivate, while his resolve gradually changes what she believes he can become. Their bond is not effortless agreement. It takes shape through demanding instruction, moments of anger and uncertainty, and Arc’s decision to keep training him even after he chooses a path she regards as bitter.

Unequal Beginnings, Chosen Apprenticeship

Yuan Guang’s need for a teacher begins in a society that has already marked out his limits. He learned that he had been born without the potential for a qi core, a condition shared by many people classified as Scraps and made to serve cultivators. Some Scraps might receive a spirit pill if they served a sect well and pleased its elders, but that possibility did not erase the inequality built into the system. When Yuan Guang later identifies himself as a cultivator at the First Coil, the word feels unexpectedly shameful rather than like the trophy he once imagined. Arc’s teaching therefore meets a student whose cultivation is inseparable from a history of exclusion and uncertain self-regard.

Arc agrees to train him only on a condition, although the available account does not specify what it is. What becomes clear is that the instruction is demanding and ongoing: she expects Yuan Guang to engage with the work rather than merely receive answers. Her approach relies on practical exercises and sometimes makes him work out the intricacies of a technique himself. She describes the principle as “learn how to learn.” The phrase captures the method’s larger purpose: Arc is teaching not only particular skills, but a way of approaching problems that Yuan Guang can carry into further cultivation.

Teaching, Disagreement, and Trust

The relationship is tested when Yuan Guang learns that Arc had withheld information. He confronts her sharply, saying that she should have told him; his anger is tied to what he might have done had he known earlier. The precise information at issue is not established in these moments, but the exchange shows that their bond is close enough for silence to feel like a betrayal—and that Yuan Guang expects honesty from someone whose guidance matters to him.

Their conflict is set against a consequential admission about Yuan Guang’s own plans. He had hoped to arm the sects fighting over Fleshmarket so that they would slaughter one another, accepting casualties as part of the scheme. His question about whether the Gun’s curse could be broken reveals a different concern: even if the Gun continued to exist as long as people had anyone to shoot, its victims might still be freed. Arc’s response is not presented as a simple resolution of their disagreement; Orient offers an alternative, and Yuan Guang concludes that he will have to commit to the Gun Path. The episode places Arc’s mentorship within a larger moral crisis, where choosing a cultivation path also means confronting what violence can and cannot accomplish.

Arc’s guidance matters during personal danger as well. Yuan Guang tells Holster to remain aboard with Orient and gives strict instructions not to look at or touch the screens, warning that they could pull her into a place from which she could never escape. He then hopes Arc will dissuade Holster from pursuing a course that Yuan Guang believes may end in death. He thinks Arc has made peace with her own fate. These moments do not show Arc giving Holster’s answer, but they reveal how Yuan Guang understands his mentor: as someone facing an eventual cost herself, and as a person whose judgment might still protect someone he cares about.

A Difficult Path and Continued Instruction

Arc’s mentorship does not end when Yuan Guang commits to the Gun Path. Yuan Guang states that he has decided to remain on it, and Arc acknowledges that the choice will be bitter while respecting his resolve. She then says she will keep teaching him. Her response distinguishes disagreement about the difficulty of his decision from abandonment: she can recognize the burden without withdrawing her support.

The contrast with Mordiggian clarifies what Arc contributes. Mordiggian favors detailed theoretical explanations and answers questions directly; Arc’s sessions have trained Yuan Guang through practice and independent problem-solving. The difference is not framed as a contest over which teacher is better. Rather, it shows that Yuan Guang encounters distinct forms of instruction, while Arc’s particular influence lies in making him participate actively in learning.

That practical training advances toward an innate technique. After cycling relentlessly since their previous meeting, Yuan Guang asks whether his iron flesh is ready to use one. Arc explains that such techniques serve a purpose, as caretaker spirits do, and decides which Gun Path innate technique they will engrave into his core and flesh. The exchange makes the mentorship concrete: Arc’s instruction is linked to decisions about how Yuan Guang’s cultivation will be embodied, not only to general encouragement.

Growing Respect and Shared Purpose

Before the History Road competition, Yuan Guang chooses to train through the days and nights leading up to the race. He completes his soul sutra circuit by the second day, and the speed of his progress pleases Arc. Still, when he asks whether he can close the gap, she answers no. Her encouragement does not disguise the distance he must cover; she tells him to keep working and invokes the climb of a mountain as an image of determined effort. In this exchange, care takes the form of honest assessment joined to continued expectation.

Arc’s response to Yuan Guang changes as she watches him persist. She admits that she is beginning to believe she was wrong about him, a restrained but important revision of her judgment. The admission gives their relationship a reciprocal movement: Arc forms the student, but his conduct also alters her expectations. Her fondness is apparent in the way she looks at him, while his willingness to continue training supplies the grounds for her renewed confidence.

By the time Yuan Guang declares that he will make the world better and put an end to tyrants and monsters, he identifies Arc as the person who asked him to defeat the Demigods of Ultraviolence. He adopts that request as part of his own purpose. The relationship’s significance therefore extends beyond individual training: Arc’s challenge helps give direction to Yuan Guang’s power, while his final commitment shows that her influence remains active in his choices. The evidence establishes this charge and his acceptance of it, rather than the eventual outcome of the mission.
