Yuan–Holster
GunsoulYuan Guang and Holster’s relationship is defined by protection made practical: he watches over her, keeps her away from those who would claim her, and makes her wishes matter when the prospect of a cure comes at the price of returning her to the Flesh Mansion Sect. The bond is not free of tension. Yuan Guang’s hunt for Slash remains his priority, even when Holster fears for his safety, so their trust is tested by the distance between the person he is determined to protect and the revenge he refuses to abandon.
A Bond Formed Through Protection
Yuan Guang’s care for Holster is visible in his attention to her immediate safety. When he senses a presence near the Spirit-train and finds Holster missing from the panoramic wagon, he rushes to the dining cabin calling for her. There he finds her eating an unfamiliar meal beside an unknown woman. He takes a fighting stance, his hands tightening into fists, but the short distance between the stranger and Holster keeps him from attacking at once. His response shows both vigilance and restraint: he prepares to defend Holster without putting her in danger through a reckless rush.
That vigilance has a larger cause. As a Hitobashira, Holster is vulnerable to people who would treat her as a resource rather than a person. With the Spirit-train approaching Fleshmarket, Yuan Guang recognizes that stepping off the train could make her a target. He asks Orient to keep Holster hidden onboard while he handles affairs in town. Orient promises that unwelcome guests will not find her and will have no safe way out of the train’s wagons; Yuan Guang is surprised by how protective she is of her passengers, then offers to test her confidence in a spar. His concern thus extends beyond keeping Holster physically close: he seeks reliable protection for the time he cannot be beside her.
Refusing the Price of a Cure
The clearest test of the bond comes when Yuan Guang tells Holster that a man from the Flesh Mansion Sect has offered to cure her if Yuan Guang does his bidding. He immediately reassures her that he will not return her to the Sect, but leaves room for her to respond before deciding how to proceed. Holster freezes, turns pale, and shakes her head violently; she grabs his shirt and clings to him, unable to answer aloud. Orient tries to comfort her, and makes clear that Holster wants no further encounter with the Sect.
Yuan Guang accepts that refusal. He says they will find another way, recognizing that the Hitobashira procedure was probably painful and that Holster’s reaction cannot be dismissed as a mere obstacle to a cure. He promises that the Sect will never touch her again. Though she is somewhat reassured, she continues gripping his clothes. Yuan Guang spends most of the evening sitting with her in the last car until she falls asleep, while Orient helps him review mantras and mudras. The scene binds protection to patience: he does not demand that Holster immediately calm down or release him, and he remains beside her while pursuing a different course.
Trust Under the Pressure of Revenge
Holster’s trust is expressed through small, concrete gestures. When Yuan Guang returns to the Spirit-train from the Headshot Forge, she runs over and hugs him. He smiles and awkwardly pats her head, telling her he is back in one piece. The greeting contrasts with her earlier terror at the thought of being surrendered: she now welcomes his return, while his response shows affection that he expresses less fluently than she does.
Yet her reliance on him does not erase the danger of his chosen objective. Yuan Guang still puts burying Slash in a ditch ahead of Holster’s concerns. He is prepared to risk his half-life, bound by an Unspeakable Vow and unwilling to face Mingxia and Jaw-Long in Nowhere if he backs away from revenge. He insists that he will not fail and asks Holster to trust him. She watches him silently, then nods meekly. Her worry remains, but she chooses to believe him, having seen him defeat a Rad-Hag with nearly all his bones broken. That history makes her trust specific rather than blind: it rests on what she has witnessed, even as his willingness to endure further danger gives her reason to fear.
What the Relationship Reveals About Yuan Guang
The bond also serves as evidence against Yuan Guang’s suspicion that he is only another power-hungry cultivator. Confronted with an ugly reflection of his own soul, he asks whether he would have carried Holster and searched for a cure if strength were all he cared about. His answer lies in the choices already made: he could have surrendered her to the Rad-Hag or sacrificed her for his own purposes, but instead he kept her with him and tried to protect her.
Holster represents the violence of a world in which Sects can turn children into living sacrifices and kill with impunity. Yuan Guang’s hatred of that order helps explain why his ambition to ascend through the Coils of Infinity is not simply a contest for personal power: he wants to reject a wasteland that treats Scraps as slaves and resources. His protection of Holster does not end his pursuit of Slash, and the story keeps that contradiction in view. It makes their relationship a measure of what Yuan Guang values—and a continuing test of whether his promises of care can survive the dangers he willingly seeks.
