Vera and Frank Reunite in Salamanca and Conceive a Child

Maya

Vera and Frank’s reunion in Salamanca turns a carefully bounded encounter into an unexpected new beginning: despite their agreement not to reconcile, Vera becomes pregnant and resolves to have the child, while leaving Frank’s future involvement to his choice.

The Reunion and Its Setting

By the time the story reaches Seville, the narrator has reserved three rooms at the Hotel Doña María rather than two, explaining that one is for a friend who may arrive later. The narrator and Frank spend the early part of the day exploring the city. In the Alcázar gardens, among palms that recall Taveuni, Frank remarks on the beauty of the place. This Seville excursion frames the later disclosure: the additional room and the narrator’s promise to show Frank something unforgettable foreshadow a reunion whose consequences have not yet been explained.

The Promise Not to Reconcile

Vera recalls that she and Frank had spent their last night together in Salamanca. Before that night, they had made a solemn promise not to resume living together. When they hesitated outside Vera’s room, unsure whether Frank would return to his own room or enter hers, they agreed that their interlude would not mark a reconciliation; they considered their relationship over. Frank confirms the distinction, acknowledging that this was what they had said. The episode thus begins with an explicit boundary: closeness does not, by itself, undo their separation.

The Pregnancy and Vera’s Decision

Vera explains that she had thought there was no risk that night, because it was the safest day of the month. When she nevertheless became pregnant, Sonia immediately came to mind. Vera had no doubt that she wanted the child. She was prepared to become a single mother and says she would have informed Frank after the birth, but first needed to wait because the pregnancy might not succeed. Her decision is presented as independent of any promise of renewed partnership.

Frank’s Choice and the Scene’s Consequence

Vera says she wanted Frank to be free to decide whether he would have contact with the child, and that this remains her position. The disclosure reopens the future between them without treating the pregnancy as a guaranteed reconciliation: Vera has chosen motherhood, while Frank’s role remains his to choose. As she tells him what happened in Salamanca, Frank does not hide his tears and asks her to continue. The reunion’s decisive consequence is therefore both personal and unresolved: a child is expected, but the couple’s former agreement and Vera’s insistence on Frank’s freedom still shape what comes next.
