Miles Vorkosigan—Ivan Vorpatril Relationship

Memory

Miles Vorkosigan and Ivan Vorpatril’s relationship is marked by an unusual balance of familial informality and professional reliance. When Gregor appoints Miles to investigate Simon Illyan’s breakdown, Miles makes Ivan his assistant and tells him plainly that the work may involve serious danger. Ivan’s joking response falls away; he accepts the assignment, remains at Illyan’s side, and helps Miles protect the investigation. Their bond is not merely affection or shared background: it becomes practical trust under pressure.

Familiarity beneath rank

The appointment places Miles in a new official position, but Ivan’s first reaction is to treat the change with bemusement. Summoned from work by Gregor’s attendant, he initially fears an emergency at the Imperial Residence or a crisis involving his mother. Instead, he finds Miles wearing the heavy gold chain of office: square enameled plaques bearing the Vorbarra arms, with Gregor’s electronic seal at the center. Ivan reaches to test the chain, then asks whether the appointment is real. Miles answers by telling him that, for the duration, he should address him as Lord Auditor Coz.

The exchange lets the new hierarchy arrive without displacing their old ease. Ivan jokes that Gregor has summoned him only to carry Miles’s luggage, and Miles responds in kind. Yet Gregor confirms that the appointment is real and that the first request Miles made was for an assistant. The chain makes Miles’s new authority visible; Ivan’s familiar teasing keeps that authority from turning their relationship into a formal one. Their banter is not evidence that the assignment is trivial: it establishes the ease from which they can move into difficult work together.

Choosing an assistant

Miles defines the stakes before Ivan agrees to help. The two of them will audit ImpSec’s handling of Illyan’s breakdown, Miles explains, and he cannot predict what the work will demand. It may be, he warns, like carrying high explosives. He wants an assistant he can rely on absolutely. The bluntness of that appeal makes trust the basis of Ivan’s appointment: Miles does not ask him merely because he is available or because the Emperor has sent for him.

Ivan’s reaction changes at once. His irony drops, he straightens, and he recognizes the importance of investigating what happened to Illyan. He says it is about time someone pressed the matter, adding that his mother will be pleased. The shift is small but decisive: Ivan moves from teasing the office and its inconvenience to taking the purpose of the assignment seriously. Miles’s confidence in him is met by Ivan’s willingness to engage with the work.

Staying with Illyan

The relationship is also shown through a task that Ivan finds personally uncomfortable. When Miles must leave the clinic level to receive a briefing, Ivan says he would rather charge a laser-cannon site naked than remain there alone. Miles acknowledges the objection but asks him to stay with Illyan until he returns. Ivan takes the chair beside Illyan, accepting the duty despite his stated reluctance.

When Miles comes back, Ivan is still at Illyan’s side. He has pushed himself as far back in his chair as it will allow, and one boot taps nervously against the floor. His discomfort has not disappeared, but neither has it made him abandon the post. He rises when Miles appears at the door and mutters his relief that Miles has returned. The scene shows the trust between the two men through action rather than reassurance: Miles can leave a vulnerable, consequential responsibility with Ivan, and Ivan stays until relieved.

Trust put to work

Later, when Miles suspects the evidence-room records may connect to Illyan’s sabotage, he cancels his dinner plans and tells Ivan to do the same. He orders the room sealed, directs Ivan to sit at the sergeant’s station, and makes him a witness to the fact that Miles himself has not entered the storage areas that day. Ivan’s role is now more than assistance in the general sense. Miles entrusts him with helping preserve the scene and establish a clear account of what has and has not happened.

Across these episodes, the relationship moves fluidly between private familiarity and public responsibility. Ivan can mock the weight of Miles’s new office, but he also accepts its demands when the inquiry turns serious; Miles can joke with him, but he relies on him to remain beside Illyan and to help secure potentially important evidence. Their shared work does not erase the difference in Miles’s authority. Instead, it shows that the authority functions alongside an older, more personal confidence: Miles asks for Ivan because he trusts him, and Ivan answers that trust with steady participation.
