Simon Illyan and Alys Vorpatril's romance

Memory

Simon Illyan and Alys Vorpatril’s romance becomes legible through small changes in routine rather than a formal announcement. A shared breakfast, a dance that surprises their acquaintances, and plans for a secluded vacation reveal a relationship extending from private intimacy into public life. Its significance lies partly in the contrast: Illyan, long associated with duty and self-restraint, is now seen enjoying an ease and personal life that those around him had rarely witnessed.

Private Clues and Domestic Intimacy

The first clear clue comes when Miles Vorkosigan learns that Illyan is having breakfast with Alys. A book delivered by Alys helps explain her presence, but Miles initially treats the visit as an occasion for her to give Illyan some Vorish history to read. The scene supplies a more intimate explanation only gradually. Miles knocks at the guest suite and waits while Illyan asks who is there and says he will be out in a minute. The wait stretches into several minutes, during which Miles knocks again and his aunt tells him that his impatience is rude.

The sounds from inside—the shuffling, the clinking, and a low laugh—make the delay feel like an interruption of a private morning rather than a routine appointment. When Alys finally opens the door, she is dressed formally for the hour and wears her hair loose in waves down her back. The breakfast tray in the sitting room, overlooking the back garden, is nearly empty. These details do not amount to a declaration from either participant, but together they recast the visit: Miles has arrived not merely to consult Illyan, but at a moment when his aunt and Illyan have been sharing unhurried domestic time.

From Private Relationship to Public Ease

At a later gathering, Alys and Illyan appear together in a more public setting. The Countess Vorkosigan arranges for Alys to stop acting as escort to Gregor and Laisa Toscane and encourages her to relax and enjoy the occasion. Illyan is present in civilian clothes, sharply dressed but still carrying the habitual air of someone not entirely at ease in a social room. Alys then takes him away before he can slip back into work mode. Their movement together is quiet, but the scene presents her as someone who can draw him out of the professional role that has long shaped his public manner.

The clearest public sign of their closeness is their dancing. Miles sees Illyan pass with Alys, and Ivan is astonished that Illyan can dance at all. Miles, too, is struck by how well he dances. Other guests notice: Henri Vorvolk’s wife comments to her husband as the pair move past, and he watches with a bemused smile. The dance is a visible change in Illyan’s social presence, not simply proof of a new skill. Miles recalls that he had never seen Illyan do anything like this before and connects the difference to the fact that Illyan had always been on duty.

Miles also considers the possibility that Illyan’s changed behavior reflects the removal of his memory chip. Dr. Ruibal had mentioned personality changes, as well as cognitive changes, as a possible side effect. Miles does not settle on that explanation: he also wonders whether the release from decades of crushing responsibility could account for Illyan’s new ease. The scene leaves both explanations open, while making the change in behavior itself unmistakable.

Recognition and Family Reactions

A stray wisp of hair escapes Alys’s elaborate coiffure, and as she brushes it back, Miles remembers seeing her at breakfast. The conjunction of that private image with the public dance produces his sudden recognition that Illyan and Alys are sleeping together. Miles is momentarily uncertain whether to feel indignant or pleased; what he can clearly admire is Illyan’s nerve. His reaction captures how unexpectedly the relationship has entered his awareness: what had looked like a formal family visit and an ordinary dance now form parts of the same intimate story.

Ivan’s response is less amused. He later tells Miles that Illyan is sleeping with his mother and blames Miles, partly because the relationship is unfolding in Miles’s house. Ivan regards the pairing as embarrassing and potentially scandalous: Alys is high Vor, while Illyan stands apart from ordinary social categories. Miles counters that the two are discreet and that Alys’s standing and Illyan’s singular reputation make public comment unlikely. The exchange establishes a difference between the cousins’ perspectives. Ivan sees a family and status complication; Miles sees an unexpected but apparently mutually chosen attachment and is more entertained than alarmed.

A Shared Future, on Their Own Terms

Alys tells Ivan that, after Gregor’s betrothal ceremony and before preparations for the wedding gather pace, she and Illyan intend to take a half-month vacation on the south coast. The destination is a middle-class resort neither of them has heard of, chosen by Illyan partly because it has never come to ImpSec’s attention. His choice turns his professional habits into a wry element of their private plans: even while seeking privacy, he applies the instincts of someone accustomed to institutional scrutiny.

Alys describes wanting to spend the days in a beach chair, in the sun, doing nothing, and to drink the resort’s fruit-garnished drinks. She also signals that the evenings will not be devoted to idleness. The plan is more concrete than the earlier clues: it places the pair together for an extended period away from the courtly calendar and gives Alys’s wishes a distinct voice. Their vacation is timed around Gregor and Laisa’s betrothal and the coming wedding, so the relationship occupies space within family life rather than appearing as an isolated dalliance.

Ivan remains embarrassed, but Miles answers by reminding him that his parents’ generation did not have uterine replicators on Barrayar. The joke deflates Ivan’s appeal to age and decorum without making the relationship itself a scandal. By the time their plans are known, Illyan and Alys have moved from a half-hidden breakfast to dancing before their acquaintances and openly arranging time together. The evidence does not provide a formal declaration or a later account of the vacation; it does show a relationship becoming harder to mistake, and a former security chief making room for intimacy beyond duty.
