Ocular implant
Mickey7The ocular implant is not merely a visual accessory: it connects directly to the brain, can become dangerous when it malfunctions, and also carries messages. Its power surge turns an ordinarily integrated device into a visible vulnerability, while Mickey Barnes’s response exposes how little medical care he expects to receive.
Design and Function
An examiner scans Mickey Barnes’s ocular with a wand and finds evidence of a power surge within the past hour. The warning is serious because the implant has a direct connection to the brain; a malfunctioning unit can be dangerous, not simply inconvenient. The scan makes the device’s normally unobtrusive presence suddenly consequential.
The implant is difficult to replace. As Mickey Barnes understands it, ocular implants are interwoven with the optic nerves and interface with the brain in several other places. They cannot simply be removed and swapped for new units: for an ordinary patient, replacement would mean a long, delicate microsurgery. The device’s integration offers function at the cost of making repair invasive and technically demanding.
Diagnosis and Unequal Prospects for Care
Cat Chen looks over the scan readout and asks what it means. The examiner recommends that Mickey Barnes have the implant checked, but explains that he handles wetware and that someone from Bioelectronics would need to assess it. The division of expertise leaves the warning unresolved in the moment; the scan identifies a hazard, not a repair.
Mickey Barnes thanks the examiner and says he will consider the advice, but his narration makes clear that this is a lie: he has already decided against pursuing it. He believes the colony would not devote the time and effort required for his microsurgery. In his calculation, a trip to the tank would be easier. The implant’s technical complexity thus intersects with his expectation that his own continued bodily care is not worth the expense.
Communication and Narrative Role
Later, as Mickey Barnes is halfway to the gym, his ocular pings. A message from Mickey8 appears, beginning with the fragment “Ar chi**?”; another message follows: “Eight?” The moment establishes the ocular as a channel for communication as well as a medical device. After its earlier warning about a potentially dangerous fault, the ping also returns the reader to the implant’s less visible role in connecting Mickey Barnes to events beyond his immediate surroundings.
