Jen's Herb Party

Jen's Herb Party is the Saturday-afternoon multi-level-marketing recruitment event at which Nightbitch, still raw from the killing of the cat, is maneuvered into joining Jen's herbal supplement line by handing over six hundred dollars in cash. The party, held in Jen's sprawling house in the Prairie Breeze development on the east side of town, is the novel's most concentrated portrait of emotional capitalism: a sales ritual that converts maternal exhaustion, hope, and the desire for community into revenue. It is also the moment Nightbitch's fierce critical stance toward the world—her defining trait—fails her, as she finds herself needing other women badly enough to participate in their collective delusion. The event marks a quiet surrender, one that costs her money, pride, and a measure of the very selfhood she has been fighting to reclaim.
