The Dream Recitation

Lennie asks George to tell him about their dream, and George begins the familiar recitation of their shared vision: a little place with a cow, a pig, chickens, and alfalfa for the rabbits. Lennie joyfully interjects about tending the rabbits and living 'off the fatta the lan'.' George speaks woodenly at first, but the ritual comforts both men. This recitation is the emotional core of their relationship, representing hope and companionship in a harsh world. As George speaks, he retrieves Carlson's Luger from his pocket, snaps off the safety, and positions it behind Lennie's back, preparing for the inevitable.
