Agent Fonseca

Agent Fonseca is a senior officer of Spain's Guardia Real, the elite security force tasked with protecting the royal family. He is a tall, muscular man with a shaved head and a commanding presence, whose demeanor is marked by a rigid, no-nonsense professionalism. He is first seen at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, where he is assigned to protect Ambra Vidal, the museum director and fiancée of Prince Julián, during Edmond Kirsch's presentation. Fonseca's primary directive is to keep Vidal safe and out of trouble, a mission that becomes increasingly complicated as the night unfolds.

Role in the Kirsch Assassination and Immediate Aftermath

When Edmond Kirsch is shot dead during his presentation, Fonseca's instincts shift to crisis management. He immediately tackles Robert Langdon to the ground, suspecting the professor had advance knowledge of the attack because Langdon was rushing toward the podium just before the gunshot. Fonseca's interrogation is aggressive and direct, demanding to know how Langdon knew about the shooter's navy uniform. He is visibly frustrated when Langdon reveals that the information came from Kirsch's computer, Winston, and is further unsettled when Winston identifies the assassin as Admiral Luis Ávila. Fonseca's focus remains on controlling the scene and securing Vidal, whom he orders to be taken to the Royal Palace in Madrid for her safety.

Conflict with Ambra Vidal and Robert Langdon

Fonseca's authority is immediately challenged by Ambra Vidal, who refuses to obey his orders. She rejects a phone call from Prince Julián, telling Fonseca that the prince must learn to give her space. When Fonseca insists she must leave for Madrid, she openly defies him, stating she will not abandon Edmond's body. The tension escalates when Langdon and Vidal, with Winston's help, escape the museum by plunging the dome into darkness and fleeing through a service exit. Fonseca is left humiliated, having lost his charge, and is forced to report to Commander Diego Garza that the future queen has run off with an American professor. His frustration is palpable as he recounts how a computer tricked him with false information.

Pursuit and Death in Barcelona

Following orders from above Garza's head, Fonseca and his partner, Agent Díaz, pursue Langdon and Vidal to Barcelona. They track them to Casa Milà, where a chaotic rooftop confrontation ensues. Fonseca, from a helicopter, aims a device at Vidal, causing her to fall and lose Edmond's phone. After rescuing the pair, Fonseca insists on taking them to Madrid, but Vidal threatens to have him fired if he does not redirect to Sagrada Família. Once inside the basilica, Fonseca and Díaz are ordered to wait in the sanctuary while Langdon, Vidal, and Father Beña descend to the crypt. Fonseca steps away to make a private phone call, leaving Díaz alone. When Díaz is killed by Admiral Ávila, Fonseca is heard struggling in the darkness. A gunshot rings out, followed by a heavy thud, and Fonseca is found dead, his body having hit the floor. His death marks the end of a night where his unwavering loyalty to protocol and his inability to adapt to the rapidly shifting circumstances ultimately proved fatal.
