Asien’dalun Estate Shootout and Aseida’s Arrest
PeacemakerThe Asien’dalun Estate Shootout and Aseida’s Arrest was an armed confrontation that exposed the Shadow Guild’s presence within Lord Aseida’s household and ended with its leading tactician dead and Aseida in custody. What began as an attempt to obtain an apology and confer with the lord became a deadly exchange of fire; the response then extended beyond the shooting to securing the estate, protecting its records, and determining who could be held responsible.
Background and Grounds for Action
The confrontation followed a discovery in the south. Shadow Guild operatives had disarmed some of the best local Guild units, then sent them to defend rural areas without giving their equipment back. The maneuver had ostensibly been ordered by the legitimate Guild, but its author was still unknown. The matter surfaced when Ilisidi took in two of the mistreated Dojisigi Guild members and moved to rescue several hundred countryfolk. Her southern forces also captured two surviving members of the Shadow Guild’s southern leadership. What they learned supplied the legal grounds Ilisidi needed to act against the Kadagidi in the north.
The link between the Kadagidi and the Shadow Guild was personal as well as political. Aseida’s chief bodyguard, Haikuti, had been the Guild’s chief tactician and, for two years, had exercised power behind Murini. He was suspected of possibly having conducted attacks on Tabini’s residence. Aseida, by contrast, was described as no great intellect and claimed innocence of everything. His denial did not remove the significance of the armed Guild presence he was sheltering.
The Estate Confrontation
Bren Cameron and Jase Graham went to the Kadagidi estate to explain which foreign guests and minor children had been endangered and to ask for an apology. Rather than bring Aseida out to confer, the lord’s bodyguard opened fire. Banichi and Jase Graham’s guard returned it. Gunfire then came from an upper story toward Bren and Jase Graham; Jase Graham’s guard fired back, ruining a window. Bren’s account to Tabini emphasized that his party had not fired first.
The exchange was not a single shot followed by an immediate surrender. Haikuti and two other Guild units were killed, as was the person who had fired from the upper story at Asien’dalun. Bren’s party and Ilisidi’s bodyguard took tactical positions in the house and grounds. Their purpose now included preventing the destruction of evidence: they stopped servants from destroying records and arrested people they believed to be plain-clothes Guild members. The remaining domestic servants were dismissed to the township in accordance with Guild regulations.
Haikuti’s Death and Aseida’s Capture
Haikuti’s death marked the reversal at the center of the operation. When he realized that Banichi was challenging him, he had an opportunity to flee. Instead, his own nature led him to shoot first; Banichi shot accurately and killed him. The man who had operated as the Shadow Guild’s tactician and wielded influence from behind Murini could no longer direct events from concealment. The confrontation turned the Guild’s covert presence at the estate into an immediate, visible defeat.
Aseida was inside the house during the fighting. He was brought out from hiding under escort, rather than captured in the exchange itself. The distinction mattered in the account Bren gave Tabini: the violence began with the bodyguard’s fire, while the lord was subsequently secured and removed. Aseida was taken to Tirnamardi, where he asked Lord Tatiseigi for protection and was flatly refused. By the time Ilisidi’s party was traveling on, Aseida was ahead of them on the train, under nonstop questioning by the dowager’s bodyguards, who were themselves exhausted and had just been shot at by Shadow Guild operatives he had been harboring.
Political and Immediate Consequences
The estate operation also rearranged local alliances. As Ilisidi’s party left Asien’dalun, it gave way to Taibeni clan members who were guests at Lord Tatiseigi’s estate. They, too, had been offended by the operation launched from Kadagidi soil. They held the Kadagidi estate in alliance with Tatiseigi, joining former enemies against a shared threat. Tabini recognized the unusual alignment: Taibeni and Tatiseigi, once opposed, were now working together against the Kadagidi.
When Bren returned, he told Tabini that Ilisidi had arrested Aseida that morning. He corrected the report of an explosion: the damage had been to a window, and Jase Graham’s guard had fired. Bren also said that the Assassins had made a full, willing report to Ilisidi. He expected a recording of the incident by the next day, although he cautioned that he had not yet seen it; his memory and Banichi’s agreed that Aseida’s senior Guild member had fired first. The planned record would make the sequence available for later use rather than leave the matter solely to competing accounts.
The operation had immediate protective stakes beyond the political contest. Bren told Jase Graham that Tabini knew what had happened, but not what was still developing, and stressed that the children’s safety could be guaranteed while they remained there. The boy’s birthday had been lost amid the transaction. That contrast gives the arrest its unsettled ending: the confrontation secured Aseida and killed Haikuti, but it did not resolve the larger danger. The household’s armed resistance had been suppressed, while the political and security consequences were still unfolding.
