Rescue of Hostages in a Dojisigi Village

Peacemaker

The Rescue of Hostages in a Dojisigi Village was an operation by Ilisidi that freed several hundred countryfolk from a Shadow Guild hostage plot and helped disrupt the Guild’s leadership in the district. Its importance lies in both the immediate rescue and the way Ilisidi acted through her own forces when she feared the central Guild command could not be trusted.

Causes and Background

In the preceding month, the Shadow Guild, still active in the mountainous Dojisigin Marid, had used an order ostensibly issued by the legitimate Guild to disarm the strongest native Guild units. Those units were then sent to defend rural areas without their equipment. The order’s true issuer remained uncertain, leaving the legitimate Guild’s authority vulnerable to manipulation.

The hostage crisis emerged from that compromised environment. Shadow Guild operatives took a village hostage and forced two Dojisigi Guild members to undertake a mission against Lord Tatiseigi, threatening to have their relatives killed if they refused. The hostages were therefore leverage both against the Guild members and in the Shadow Guild’s attempt to advance its campaign against Tatiseigi.

The Rescue

The two Dojisigi Guild members did not carry out the mission. When they saw Lord Tatiseigi and Ilisidi in the company of Cajeiri and foreign children, they surrendered and appealed to Ilisidi. She freed the village the previous night. The account establishes that the rescue was carried out by her forces, not personally by Ilisidi.

Ilisidi acted outside central Guild command because she feared that command might be compromised. Her choice of an independent chain of action answered the immediate danger to the villagers while avoiding reliance on the very institution whose orders had enabled the disarming and dispersal of the local units.

Consequences and Significance

The operation had a second consequence beyond the release of the villagers: it incidentally removed part of the Shadow Guild’s leadership in the district. Ilisidi’s southern units also took two surviving southern Shadow Guild leaders into custody that night. What she learned from them gave her the legal cause to move against the Kadagidi in the north the following morning.

The rescue thus connected a rural hostage crisis to a broader political and legal reckoning. It exposed how the Shadow Guild could exploit the appearance of legitimate Guild authority, while showing Ilisidi responding through a trusted force of her own. When Bren later reported the operation to Tabini, he confirmed that Cajeiri had not participated in the related events at Tirnamardi; the young gentleman had kept his guests out of danger and remained in protected areas under guard.
