Shishogi’s Attempt to Burn Assignment Records

Peacemaker

Shishogi’s Attempt to Burn Assignment Records is the firebombing of the office holding the Guild’s assignment records and the discovery of its aftermath during the Assassins’ Guild headquarters operation. The fire killed Shishogi but did not erase the evidence: records and books survived, and a man carrying several notebooks from the office was intercepted. Whether that interception was part of a deliberate plan remained uncertain, making the recovery itself a matter for investigation.

The Fire and Its Immediate Aftermath

As the operation reached the Guild’s administrative wing, the security doors had been held open with a small wad of plastic; a junior guard unit then panicked and damaged a door shortly before Cenedi began another action in the wing. When Banichi asked Nawari about the office, Nawari reported that there had been an incendiary. Shishogi was dead, considerably burned but recognizable, and apparently had died by suicide.

The office had been firebombed, and some records were certainly lost. The fire suppression system nevertheless functioned, preserving Shishogi’s body and, notably, certain books on which he had fallen. Shelves had also collapsed in a way that protected other books. The office was sealed so experts could examine what remained.

Records and the Intercepted Notebooks

The damage was serious, but the records had not been destroyed. Nawari also reported that one man had been intercepted with several notebooks taken from the office. Their removal under the circumstances made them a potentially fortunate find, particularly because Shishogi himself could no longer be questioned.

The notebooks did not provide an immediately settled explanation. Cenedi acknowledged that they might have been left or taken with the intention that the authorities intercept them; they might instead have been genuine evidence removed from danger. He said the item would be examined carefully, preserving the distinction between what had been recovered and what investigators could yet establish about its purpose.

Investigation and Significance

Cenedi reported that the entire hall had been secured and that investigators were mapping the office’s final hours of operation, reaching back to dawn the previous day. This placed the fire within a larger effort to reconstruct what had happened at the Guild headquarters rather than treating the blaze as an isolated loss of records.

The incident leaves two opposing outcomes in view: the fire destroyed some material and killed the person who might have explained it, yet suppression, collapsed shelving, and the intercepted notebooks preserved avenues of inquiry. The books’ survival and the notebooks’ uncertain provenance mean that the attempt to erase the office’s records did not produce a complete disappearance of evidence; instead, it shifted the task to careful examination and reconstruction.
