Failed Assassination of Tatiseigi at Tirnamardi

Peacemaker

The Failed Assassination of Tatiseigi at Tirnamardi was a thwarted attempt against Lord Tatiseigi, carried out under pressure from the Shadow Guild and exposed when the two Dojisigi Assassins involved surrendered. Their account connected the threat at Lord Tatiseigi’s estate to the Kadagidi estate and revealed that their relatives had been held hostage. The episode also unsettled the people caught up in its aftermath, who knew that the danger reached beyond a dispute between lords.

Target and circumstances

The mission was directed specifically at Lord Tatiseigi and timed for his return to the estate. According to Bren’s later account, the assassins did not know that Lord Tatiseigi would arrive with guests. The operation was unFiled: the assassins reported that they had been coerced into proceeding, with the Shadow Guild holding their relatives hostage.

The attempt carried risks beyond its intended target. When Jase accompanied three children down at Lord Tatiseigi’s estate, two of his bodyguards were with him. The threat was therefore not confined to Lord Tatiseigi: foreign guests and minor children were also exposed to danger. The adults’ security blackout concealed much of what had happened, but did not make the circumstances seem normal to those present.

Discovery and surrender

The two Dojisigi Assassins were roused from hiding at the estate and surrendered. They made a full, willing report to Ilisidi, the aiji-dowager, describing the coercion and the hostage-taking. Their surrender changed the incident from an unexplained threat into testimony linking the planned attack to the Shadow Guild and to people sent from the Kadagidi estate.

Cajeiri’s understanding remained partial as he travelled away from Tirnamardi. He knew that the Kadagidi lord was being held in the next car and that the two assassins had come to kill his great-uncle; from what he could make out, they seemed to have turned on the Kadagidi lord instead. His impression conveys the confusion surrounding the episode without resolving more than the adults had told him.

Account and significance

Bren explained that he and Jase had gone to the Kadagidi estate to protest the threat and seek an apology. Instead of bringing Lord Aseida to meet them, Lord Aseida’s bodyguard fired on them; gunfire also came from an upper story, and Jase’s guard returned fire. This later confrontation formed part of the same crisis, but Bren distinguished it from the assassination mission: the assassins had been sent to target Lord Tatiseigi, and their account and surrender provided a basis for establishing what that mission was.

The episode’s significance lies in that distinction. What might have appeared to be a conflict between lords was revealed as an operation shaped by the Shadow Guild’s coercion, with relatives used as leverage and an intended victim whose guests were unknowingly placed at risk. For Cajeiri, the adults’ claim that matters were going well sat uneasily beside the hurried journey, the prisoner in the next car, and the knowledge that Banichi had been hurt.
