Charles de Castelmont and Jeff’s Paid Cameo-Recovery Deal

Satan

Charles de Castelmont and Jeff’s relationship becomes a paid, clandestine recovery operation: Charles supplies the means and the counterfeit, while Jeff draws on his influence and underworld connections to obtain the genuine Castor cameo. What begins as an elite social acquaintance turns into a years-long transaction, exposing how a valuable object can bind its owner to the very hidden networks that make its recovery possible.

An Acquaintance Built on Access

Charles’s route to Jeff runs through Mirbeau, who had introduced the two men and praised Jeff’s influence in political and financial circles. Mirbeau also described Jeff as connected to the Mossad and probably the CIA, and as a high-ranking Freemason. Those credentials made Jeff seem useful to Charles not merely as a wealthy contact but as someone able to act where ordinary channels could not.

The relationship had first taken shape in Jeff’s social world. At a Paris gathering in an apartment overlooking the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe, Charles arrived with a case of the best Pomerol from his château. Jeff welcomed him and Mirbeau, and Charles later attended similar parties, always bringing wine. The guests included wealthy people, beautiful women, and younger men in the company of older patrons; the narrator makes clear that Jeff’s social glamour concealed predatory dealings. Jeff eventually invited Charles to visit him in New York, at his Florida ranch, or at his property in the Virgin Islands, and offered his assistance with a delicate matter. Charles remembered that offer when he needed help locating a missing cameo.

The Cameo Becomes a Transaction

After learning that the recovered jewel might be a reproduction, Charles saw an opportunity to prove that the D’Anjou family’s treasured cameo was not authentic. He also hoped to trace the genuine stone, whether in the United States or elsewhere, and considered using Mirbeau’s connections and Freemasonry’s less public networks. Remembering Jeff’s offer, he contacted Mirbeau and arranged to approach the American.

Less than two weeks later, Charles met Jeff privately in New York, explained the cameo case, and showed him photographs. Jeff said he believed he had seen a jewel of that kind but refused to disclose where, calling the information top secret. His silence concealed a crucial complication: the cameo was associated with a Satanist sect. Charles asked whether Jeff could find it. Jeff judged that he probably could, but warned that the job would require time, considerable ingenuity, and a great deal of money. Charles accepted the financial condition, making their acquaintance an explicit business arrangement: Jeff would attempt the recovery, and Charles would pay for the effort if the object proved to be the one he sought.

Influence, Risk, and Delay

Jeff’s access did not mean he could simply take the cameo. He knew the group in which the jewel served as a fetish, yet could not seize it openly himself. The sect’s hidden leader was described as a powerful figure within American Freemasonry and the federal government, with connections to former presidents. Jeff therefore had to work indirectly and in secret. His own position was compromised: he had faced legal proceedings for sexual misconduct and trafficking minors, and relied on powerful protection, including his purported service as an Israeli agent and the connections he believed that gave him inside the FBI and CIA.

The first obstacle was that the cameo was no longer in Miami, where Jeff had known it to be displayed. He wondered whether the sect’s leader had detected something or whether the stone had been moved to a related lodge in Washington. The possibility of searching in the capital required caution, particularly as legal complaints against Jeff accumulated. He had to establish where the jewel was and study the location before acting. The operation stretched from months into years, while Charles waited for news. The delay makes the deal more than a quick commission: it ties Charles’s hopes to Jeff’s ability to navigate a dangerous and opaque network.

Recovery and the Final Handoff

In April 2019, John Robbart entered the building after electronic listening devices established that it was empty. With Jeff and Maggie keeping watch nearby, Robbart disabled the alarm, took the cameo, and left the counterfeit supplied by Charles in its place. Jeff’s role was thus not a direct burglary but the organization and support of a covert substitution, carried out through intermediaries and surveillance.

When Jeff finally reported that he had the jewel, he arranged for it to be delivered to Charles at the Ritz. Charles recognized it as the authentic Castor cameo he had pursued for more than twenty years, and the recovery became one of the great moments of his life. Their arrangement had succeeded, but the handoff did not erase its dangers. Jeff, increasingly conscious of diffuse threats, had sent Maggie to deliver the stone in person rather than travel himself. At Charles’s celebration at Barzac on July 7, 2019, Jeff appeared with Maggie, seemed unusually dark and quiet, and left early to fly back to New York. The narration hints that police would be waiting for him at La Guardia. That ominous departure recasts the successful transaction: Charles has gained the cameo, but his intermediary’s protection and apparent freedom may be nearing their end.
