Crawford Market Shootout and Abdullah’s Rescue

Shantaram

The Crawford Market Shootout and Abdullah’s Rescue is the concealed history behind Abdullah Taheri’s survival after he was shot near Crawford Market. Recounted to Lin after the events, it turns a public police-station riot into the final stage of a planned trap, and discloses that Farid the Fixer—not Khaled Ansari—carried Abdullah out to safety. The account also shows how alliances between secret police, political informants, and criminal factions shaped the ambush and its aftermath.

The earlier connection and the trap

Abdullah begins his explanation by reminding Lin of an earlier encounter on their motorcycles. They had come upon several men from Iran; although Abdullah had told Lin to wait by the motorcycles, Lin followed him, and the two fought the men together. Abdullah now identifies them as his enemies and enemies of Khader Khan. They were connected to Iran’s secret police, the new SAVAK. The recollection establishes that the Iranian men were not strangers drawn into the later shooting by chance: Abdullah had already encountered them, and Lin had fought alongside him.

The threat widened through a chain of intelligence and betrayal. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence informed the Iranian secret police about Abdul Ghani’s contact on Khader Khan’s council. Abdullah says that six Iranian agents had already been killed and that their bodies could never be found; three men from Iran remained. Those three then worked with Abdul Ghani, who told them how to set a trap for Abdullah. The episode links the coming attack to a larger contest involving intelligence agencies and Khader Khan’s council, while showing Abdul Ghani as the intermediary who turned knowledge of the council into a plan against Abdullah.

At the time of the ambush, Abdullah says, neither he nor Khader Khan knew that Sapna was working for Abdul Ghani and preparing to move against them. Abdullah’s account marks this as crucial information withheld from the people walking into the trap. He later imagines that, had he known of Sapna’s role, he would have killed Sapna’s men himself; in fact, he did not know. The trap therefore depends not only on the Iranian agents’ presence but on Khader Khan’s side being unaware of a wider alignment against it.

The shooting and the crowd’s misunderstanding

The trap was sprung near Crawford Market. The Iranian men fired first from a position near Abdullah. The police mistook the gunfire as Abdullah shooting at them and returned fire. Abdullah understood that he was dying, and responded by firing at the police. His account describes a rapidly collapsing situation in which the agents’ first shots, the police’s mistaken attribution, and Abdullah’s response made him appear to be the source of the attack. The police station crowd later knew the outcome as a shooting so extensive that people said Abdullah’s face was unrecognizable.

Lin had been present in that crowd, outside Crawford Market police station, on the night Abdullah was shot. He remembers the scene as wild and says that everyone believed Abdullah had been shot many times. His testimony supplies a second perspective on the same event: Abdullah explains the sequence that led to the shooting, while Lin recalls the public confusion and the apparent severity of Abdullah’s condition. Their accounts meet at the police station, but Lin had not known who had arranged Abdullah’s removal from it.

The rescue from the police station

Khader Khan’s men recognized Abdullah despite the circumstances. They started a riot, then fought their way step by step into the police station and carried him out. Khader Khan had arranged a truck nearby and a doctor, Doctor Hamid, whom Lin also knew. Abdullah says they took him to the hospital and saved him. The rescue thus depended on preparation as well as force: a vehicle and medical help were waiting near the station, and the riot gave Khader Khan’s men a way to reach Abdullah and remove him.

Abdullah clarifies that Khaled Ansari was among the men who made the riot, but was not the person who carried him out. That task fell to Farid the Fixer. Lin is startled by the disclosure, because Farid had kept the rescue secret through the months he and Lin had worked closely together. The revelation revises Lin’s understanding of both men’s roles: Khaled helped create the diversion, while Farid physically brought Abdullah out of the station and into the rescue network’s care.

The secret and the unresolved aftermath

Abdullah presents Farid’s silence as proof of his reliability, calling him his brother now that Khader Khan is gone and placing him among the best of Khader Khan’s men. He also tells Lin to entrust a secret to Farid. The praise gives the rescue a continuing consequence beyond Abdullah’s survival: it reveals the depth of Farid’s loyalty and explains why Abdullah regards him as a trusted successor in the circle of men around Khader Khan.

The account does not yet establish what happened to the three Iranian men after the shooting. Lin asks whether Khader Khan caught them, but the supplied scene ends before Abdullah answers. Their fate therefore remains unresolved here, even as the story clarifies the plot against Abdullah, the police station rescue, and the identities of the men who made his survival possible.
