Habib kills Siddiqi

Shantaram

Habib Abdur Rahman’s killing of Siddiqi shatters the exhausted relief of a mountain camp and turns suspicion of Habib’s instability into an immediate danger. Seen by Lin and Khaled Ansari, the murder is sudden; Habib vanishes before the others can seize him, leaving the group to confront both the death and the uncertainty of what he may do next.

The Camp and the Discovery

Lin has just reached the camp after a month-long journey on horseback, crossing more than a hundred mountains and ten rivers, much of it in darkness. He is exhausted and still laughing with Khaled Ansari at his undignified arrival, but the laughter fades when he looks across the camp. A camouflage-coloured canvas shelter has been set aside for the wounded, while men unload cargo from the horses and carry it into a cavern. Amid this work, Lin notices Habib Abdur Rahman dragging a long, heavy object away from the line of activity and farther into the dark.

The cargo has drawn attention away from the shelter and its wounded men. That distraction gives Habib Abdur Rahman space to move Siddiqi, who has been unconscious beneath the awning. Lin asks what Habib is doing; Khaled Ansari immediately understands that something is wrong, and the two run toward the edge of the flattened plateau. Their movement marks the abrupt turn in the scene: the camp’s practical bustle, and the joking that followed Lin’s arrival, give way to the recognition of an act that cannot be undone.

The Killing and Habib’s Disappearance

Lin and Khaled Ansari reach Habib Abdur Rahman as he is kneeling over Siddiqi. Habib kills Siddiqi with a long knife, then turns to face the witnesses. The killing is not hidden from them once discovered, but their arrival comes too late to prevent it. Habib’s grin, and the apparent madness in his expression, seem to Lin to intensify when he sees their horror and anger.

Habib Abdur Rahman then appears to laugh without making a sound. Lin reads the look in his eyes as a message: Habib believes the others want him dead, and presents their hostility as confirmation that he was right not to trust them. This is Lin’s perception of the silent exchange, not a spoken explanation from Habib. The distinction matters: the witnesses can establish what Habib has done, but they cannot know from this encounter exactly what he intends or whether he will return.

Footsteps announce the arrival of Abdel Khader Khan, Nazeer, and Ahmed Zadeh. By the time Khaled Ansari and Lin turn back, Habib Abdur Rahman has disappeared. Khaled Ansari tells the others that Habib killed Siddiqi after dragging him away from the shelter, while Nazeer demands to know where Habib went. Khaled Ansari cannot say. The scene therefore ends its immediate pursuit without resolving Habib’s whereabouts or bringing him under control.

Response and Immediate Consequences

Abdel Khader Khan kneels beside Siddiqi and prays with his palms held upward. The gesture places mourning beside the practical demands of the camp: there is little moonlight left for work, and much remains to be done. Ahmed Zadeh proposes looking for Habib the following day, while acknowledging that Habib may already have left. His response does not diminish the killing; it registers the difficult choice between pursuing a dangerous man in the darkness and continuing the work still facing the group.

Khaled Ansari instead orders a guard for the night, specifying that the watchers should be men who know Habib well, rather than local men. He wants Habib watched but asks that they avoid shooting him if possible, while warning them not to take unnecessary chances. He also orders a search of Habib’s horse and pack for weapons or explosives, recalling that Habib may have carried something beneath his jacket. These precautions show that the crisis is not treated as an isolated act of violence: the group must consider what Habib can do, what he may have taken with him, and how to find him without making the situation still more dangerous.

Narrative Significance

The event reverses the scene’s emotional direction in a few moments. Lin’s arrival has prompted shared laughter with Khaled Ansari, but the sight of Habib Abdur Rahman moving an unknown burden away from the camp exposes how little that brief ease can protect. The distraction of unloading cargo and the shelter for the wounded become part of the circumstances in which Siddiqi is killed; the camp’s ordinary tasks continue even as a threat emerges among them.

The killing also changes what the group knows about Habib. The danger is no longer only a matter of suspicion or unsettling behaviour: Siddiqi is dead, the witnesses have seen Habib kill him, and Habib has fled before they can question or restrain him. Yet the cause of the killing and Habib’s precise intentions remain unresolved in this encounter. The guards, the search of his belongings, and Khaled Ansari’s caution about using force are immediate responses to that gap. The episode closes not with Habib’s capture, but with a dead man, an absent killer, and a camp forced to keep working while preparing for the possibility that he is still nearby.
