Whitewashing the Fence

Tom is punished by having to whitewash Aunt Polly's fence. He initially feels despair, but then uses reverse psychology to convince Ben Rogers and other boys that whitewashing is a privilege. They trade their treasures for the chance to work, and Tom ends up with a wealth of trinkets while the fence gets three coats of whitewash.
