Arsa Coill
TideArsa Coill is an elven-built stronghold associated with Lady Beatrix Greigh. Its name means “ancient forest,” linking the place in the narrative to its ancient origins and to the woman whose home and family are identified with it.
Name and Setting
Galahad Stormcrane explains that Arsa Coill means ancient forest and that the stronghold was built by elves. He adds that Lady Beatrix lives there, establishing the place as her home as well as a site marked by elven history. The account gives no further description of the castle’s architecture or surroundings.
The Greighs of Arsa Coill
When King James introduces Beatrix to his companions, he identifies her as Lady Beatrix Greigh of the castle of Arsa Coill and calls her his oldest comrade. Later, as preparations for the royal wedding bring the Greigh family into the story, Galahad Stormcrane is introduced to Lady Astrid and Lord Arnaud Greigh, also identified with the castle. Their appearance connects Arsa Coill not only to Beatrix herself but to the family presence surrounding her marriage.
Place in the Royal Story
Arsa Coill remains a point of identity rather than the setting for the royal events described. After King Leonardo’s death, the law of Mhuirlan makes the adult Prince James king; a herald then announces his coronation for three days later and invites the people of Metern to the festivities. At a gathering before the wedding, James speaks of Beatrix’s long friendship and the support they gave one another through family losses. The wedding ceremony ultimately names them King James and Queen Beatrix of the royal house of Mhuirlan. Against that political transition, the repeated association of Beatrix and her relatives with Arsa Coill preserves her connection to her own home and family as her role changes.
