Edel

Tide

Edel is a land whose safety depends on a system of ancient magical defenses: the Seven Seals (Edel’s Seven Seals), laid down by the first Curse-Breakers to guard it from Curse-Makers arriving from other shores. The seals are not merely a boundary against invasion; their power also holds back a force capable of flooding the land and unleashing tempests upon it.

Protection by the Seven Seals

The seals were established by the first Curse-Breakers as protection for Edel against Curse-Makers from beyond its shores. Their work is overseen by the masters at the Fortress of Maith, connecting the land’s defense to an institution charged with watching over the seals.

One seal is described as lying in the sea beyond a royal window. Galahad Stormcrane says that on a clear day it might be visible underwater as a vast circle of dark stone, perhaps a mile across. The image gives the protective system a physical presence beneath the water, even as its purpose reaches beyond any single visible structure.

The Threat Held at Bay

Edel’s defenses also restrain a power that could flood the land and cast tempests upon it. The account identifies the protection as resting on the combined power of King Strom and the Seven Seals, laid by the Seven Original Curse-Breakers. The land’s security is therefore presented as maintained through both an enduring magical system and the power of its ruler.

Narrative Significance

Edel is defined by the danger its protective boundary keeps outside: threats from other shores and the possibility of catastrophic flooding and storms. The seals make that danger legible as more than a distant political risk. Their underwater scale and the need for guardians to watch over them suggest a defense that is both part of the world’s geography and dependent on continuing vigilance.
