Gormland

Tide

Gormland is the kingdom of the Dragons whose preparedness turns back an attack from Deargland in Galahad Stormcrane’s recollection of a mission that became a war between kingdoms. Its mountains and coastal caves shelter the dragon king’s sleeping children, and its ruler’s response to Galahad’s warning makes the land a decisive counterweight to Deargland’s plans.

Setting and the Dragon Kingdom

Galahad describes crossing the border from Deargland into Gormland after escaping the demand that he make a curse against the dragon king. The account identifies Gormland through both its ruler and its terrain: the king’s children are asleep in the mountains and in caves along the coast, places from which they can be rallied when danger approaches. The kingdom is thus presented not merely as the destination of Galahad’s flight, but as a land whose dispersed dragon family can be assembled for its defense.

The Conflict with Deargland

The Gormland king does not know that the king of Deargland is planning to attack his kingdom. Galahad tells him of the danger and helps rally the sleeping dragons before Deargland strikes. When the attack comes, Gormland is fully prepared and stronger than its assailant; the defenders drive Deargland’s forces back. The victory comes at a grave cost: half of the Gormland king’s family is killed.

Galahad’s Part and the Kingdom’s Significance

Galahad’s presence in Gormland follows his refusal to use his curse-breaking power to create a curse for political violence. Instead, he carries the warning across the border and helps the threatened kingdom prepare. He also flies into the battle on a dragon, a detail that makes his participation direct rather than merely diplomatic. In the story he recounts to the court, Gormland’s defense establishes the consequences of his choice: his intervention helps thwart Deargland’s attack, but it cannot spare the dragon family from severe loss.
