Scríobh potion

Tide

The Scríobh potion gives Meira a brief chance to communicate in writing when she cannot speak. Galahad offers it at a crisis point, hoping that a letter to King James might interrupt his impending marriage to Lady Beatrix Greigh and alter the danger facing Meira.

Definition and Operation

The potion enables Meira to write in Edeltung for a limited time; it does not restore her voice. Galahad estimates that its effect will last about six hours, while earlier advice describes the period more generally as a few hours. Its practical value is therefore narrow but urgent: it creates a temporary channel for a message that Meira otherwise cannot deliver in writing.

Galahad’s Offer

Galahad gives Meira the potion after explaining that he and his masters see a possibility that King James’s proposal to Lady Beatrix Greigh stems from loneliness and attachment to the past, rather than settled romantic feeling. He urges Meira to let the king know how she feels. The proposal is explicitly uncertain, but the potion turns that uncertainty into an immediate opportunity to act.

Intended Use and Limits

Galahad warns Meira not to reveal that she is Merfolk. Instead, he encourages her to write whatever might make King James pause and consider her, even asking him to postpone the wedding. He supplies a small blue bottle, paper, and a pen, then leaves her alone in the library to write. The potion thus supports a personal appeal while also imposing a constraint on what Meira can disclose.

Use in Meira’s Crisis

Meira hesitates for a long time, her gaze fixed on Galahad as he holds out the bottle. At last she takes it, uncorks it, and drinks without coughing. The gesture marks her acceptance of the chance Galahad has offered, not evidence that the potion can undo her larger predicament: its brief effect can enable a letter, but whether the king will respond remains uncertain.
