School Life and Comic Presence

A later school visit brings the opossum into a more physical, comic moment. Melody steps on something and calls for her mother; the narration identifies it as what opossums leave behind when there is no toilet nearby, then ruefully blames Cookie. The incident turns an ordinary school tour into a reminder that the students’ animal lives do not always fit neatly into human routines or expectations of cleanliness.

Together, the classroom guess and the mishap give Cookie two contrasting kinds of presence: a participant in the school’s human-focused learning, and a source of animal behavior that disrupts the decorum of a family visit. The opossum is therefore associated with both the students’ effort to understand humans and the comic friction created when animal habits intrude into human settings.
