Central Politburo

Decoded

The Central Politburo is depicted as one of the highest authorities capable of changing individual lives through state decisions. In the novel, its power is seen both in a negotiated release from prison and in an official recognition that shields Rong Jinzhen’s family from harassment.

Authority in a Diplomatic Exchange

When Jan Liseiwicz’s father-in-law faced execution, local efforts to intervene had seemed futile. The eventual reprieve came through an extraordinary international negotiation: X Country sent a special envoy to Beijing, and the matter reached the highest level of government. The narrator understands the final decision to have been made by someone at the top of the Central Politburo, though cannot say whether the decisive authority was there or with other senior leaders.

The exchange secured the father-in-law’s release from prison. In return, X Country permitted two Chinese scientists whom it had barred from leaving to return home. The episode presents the Central Politburo’s authority not as routine administration but as part of a state-level bargain whose stakes crossed national boundaries. It also leaves the narrator wondering why X Country was so determined to obtain Liseiwicz, beyond his standing as a world-famous mathematician.

Recognition and Protection

The Central Politburo later joined the State Council and the Central Military Commission in recognizing Rong Jinzhen as a Hero of the Revolution. A representative of his work unit delivered the recognition in an official document bearing the letterhead of the People’s Liberation Army Military Region headquarters and the Provincial Revolutionary Committee. The document extended the honor to his relatives, identifying them as a revolutionary family.

Its practical protections were unusually explicit: no work unit, Communist Party member, or private individual could enter the family’s home without permission, and no one could question the family’s revolutionary credentials. A handwritten warning from the local Military Region commander stated that anyone disobeying the order would be treated as a counter-revolutionary and punished. The family treasured the document, and, according to the narrator, it prevented further trouble.

Consequences of State Recognition

The protection carried effects beyond the household. It helped Rong Jinzhen’s brother return from Shanghai to N University and later obtain permission to go abroad. His research concerned superconductors, work the narrator says he could not continue in China at the time. The official recognition therefore altered the family’s security and helped determine the brother’s academic and personal possibilities.

The narrator does not know what Rong Jinzhen had accomplished for the country to merit such authority and protection. A later rumor in the chemistry department held that he had played a major role in the nuclear weapons program; the narrator considered the dates plausible but presents this only as speculation. The Central Politburo’s recognition remains an established fact in the account, while the service behind it—and the exact reason for its extraordinary consequences—remains concealed.
