Ender's Recruitment

Colonel Hyrum Graff, the director of primary training at Battle School, visits the Wiggin home. He reveals that the fight with Stilson was a final test, and that Ender has passed. Graff explains that Ender has been selected for Battle School, a training facility for future military commanders. Ender's parents are shocked and upset, but they have no choice, as they signed a consent form when Ender was conceived. Graff speaks privately with Ender, telling him about the threat of the Buggers and the need for brilliant commanders. Ender, despite his fear and reluctance, agrees to go, feeling that it is his duty and his purpose. He says goodbye to his family, especially his sister Valentine, who is devastated by his departure.
