Ender's first Battle Room battle (Salamander vs Condor)

Ender, now a member of Salamander Army, participates in his first real battle against Condor Army. Bonzo Madrid, the commander, orders Ender to stay at the gate and not fire his weapon. Ender obeys, but he observes the battle and realizes that Bonzo's tactics are flawed. He sees that the enemy's gate is down and that the army is not using the stars effectively. Despite his orders, Ender is hit in the legs and becomes damaged, but he does not fire. The battle is a loss for Salamander, but Ender's efficiency rating is high because he did not miss any shots. This experience teaches Ender about the importance of strategy and the limitations of following orders blindly.
