Black Haze

Gunsoul

Black Haze is a dark, gunsmoke-like substance that Yuan Guang can release from his skin and use as part of his developing Gun Path. It begins as a partial adaptation of a fog-shrouding technique, but serves several distinct purposes in battle: it helps Yuan maneuver through the air, evade an enormous enemy’s grasp, and protect his approach from interception. In Gun Demon Incarnation, the haze becomes combustible, turning a defensive escape into an attack. Its importance lies not in one fixed effect, but in the way Yuan keeps extending the technique toward a more complete transformation of his body.

Nature and Development

Yuan connects Black Haze to a mist-transformation technique used by an oni he defeated earlier in his journey. That opponent could transform his body into mist; Yuan has managed only to imitate the fog-shrouding fist technique, not to make his entire body intangible. Black Haze is therefore both a practical technique and evidence of an unfinished ambition: Yuan wants to adapt the underlying transformation to his own physiology rather than simply reproduce its surface effect.

He explains to Arc that he can alter the chemical elements in his lungs to recreate gun-like effects, and wonders whether he can do something similar with his bones and flesh—temporarily turning metal into gunsmoke. Arc considers the shift possible, but says it should become easier after Yuan finishes engraving his soul’s sutras into his body. Aligning the body more closely with the concept of gunsmoke, she suggests, would make the transformation more natural. The exchange places Black Haze at an intermediate stage: Yuan can already produce smoke from his skin, but has not yet achieved the full bodily intangibility he seeks.

Mobility and Evasion

Black Haze becomes especially useful when Yuan combines it with other techniques rather than relying on it alone. During the fight with the trashemoth, he joins Gayak’s Barrier-based flight technique to the Recoil Fist. He uses feng shui to create temporary anchors in the air, then exploits them to redirect his movement and rise above the battlefield. The combination gives him greater aerial maneuverability, making Black Haze part of a broader, improvised movement system rather than an isolated trick.

Against the trashemoth itself, the haze serves a more immediate purpose. When the creature tries to catch him in its immense talons, Yuan wraps himself in Black Haze and slips through its claws. While evading the attack, he studies the creature’s qi and locates its core deep in its skull. His escape thus creates the moment he needs to assess the enemy and plan a precise counterattack.

The same protective use appears during the race involving the truck and the oni band. After Mel signals that Yuan should disrupt the band while the brothers handle the vehicle, Yuan catches up with a Recoil Shockwave and coats himself in Black Haze to prevent the musicians from intercepting him in mid-flight. He lands on the stage in a gunshot-like crash. There, the haze has bought him access to the fight, not ended it: he still has to withstand the bassist’s sound shockwave and shoot the musician before the rest of the band turns on him.

Combustion and Combat Potential

Black Haze changes from cover and evasion into an offensive weapon when Yuan uses Gun Demon Incarnation against Coyote in the stone pyramid’s tunnel. After Coyote grabs Yuan by the back of the head and drags him against the enchanted wall, Yuan releases a burst of haze. The gunsmoke produced by his transformed body ignites as soon as it seeps out, filling the tunnel with fire and burning off Coyote’s hand. Coyote releases him and outruns the flames.

This scene distinguishes the ordinary uses of Black Haze from its intensified effect in Gun Demon Incarnation. In earlier encounters, it helps Yuan move or escape; in the tunnel, its ignition forces his opponent to let go. The technique’s value is consequently both tactical and developmental: it lets Yuan respond to immediate danger while testing how far his gun-like physiology can be pushed.

Significance to Yuan’s Path

Yuan does not treat Black Haze as a finished achievement. After using it to protect himself during the battle against the plastic men, he reflects that he has barely begun the road of cultivation and considers what other techniques might be adapted to the Gun Path. The mist transformation remains an open problem: Black Haze resembles the fog-shrouding fist technique, but Yuan still wants to find a way to make his whole body intangible, as his earlier opponent could.

That unfinished quality gives the technique its narrative force. Black Haze records Yuan’s method of advancement: observe an ability, adapt it to his unusual physiology, apply it under pressure, and then identify what remains beyond his reach. Its smoke can carry him through claws, shield his passage toward a stage, or flare into fire, yet it also points toward a further transformation he has not mastered. The concept is at once a combat tool and a marker of a path still in progress.
