Coils of Infinity

Gunsoul

The Coils of Infinity are a cultivation progression that turns an awakened core into a source of perception, bodily transformation, and eventually world-altering Authority. Its stages mark more than increasing strength: each demands a different relationship between core, body, technique, and Path. Through Yuan Guang’s advance from an unlikely First Coil breakthrough to the Second Coil, and through the very different achievements of Revolver and Arc, the system frames cultivation as both disciplined physical work and a narrowing commitment to a chosen way.

Stages and Thresholds

The early Coils establish a progression from activation to capacity. Revolver identifies Yuan Guang as having passed through the First Coil when his core activates, even though Yuan is a Scrap and insists that he has no core. The breakthrough is therefore not presented as a reward for an already recognized status: it overturns Yuan’s assumptions about what his body can do. Revolver explains that the activated core should also let Yuan sense qi, a new ability that can be developed through concentration.

The Second Coil requires more than awareness. Revolver describes it as a process of continually cycling qi and reinforcing the body until it can support a technique. A cultivator must strengthen the body incrementally, as a blacksmith hammers and purifies a blade. Revolver cautions Yuan against rushing, and gives no fixed timetable: progress depends on diligence. The method makes bodily limits part of the system’s logic. Yuan’s first attempt to use Elemental Infusion brings pain and aching finger joints, showing that the technique can exceed the capacity of an unprepared body.

The Fourth Coil represents a different kind of threshold. A cultivator reaching it must dedicate themselves to a Path or create one, giving up the versatility of chaos in exchange for a distinctive discipline and innate techniques. Revolver is already on the Fourth Coil and approaching the Fifth; the achievement is rare even among the Stoneskin Sect. At the Fifth Coil, the change reaches beyond the cultivator’s body: the core expands outward, overwrites the qi of the surrounding world, and temporarily grants Authority over a portion of the Dao. This stage approaches the divine, is exceptionally difficult and dangerous, and produces a unique Authority technique for each user, reflecting that cultivator’s Path and true self.

Yuan Guang’s Breakthroughs

Yuan Guang’s Second Coil breakthrough follows a period of unusually intense cultivation. The spirit-train’s qi nourishes the roots of his bullet-core, which have spread through his body, and the Rad-Hag’s death appears to strengthen it further. As the air in the wagons acquires a faint electrical undercurrent, Yuan draws on that qi. His metal tendrils now reach to his feet and throughout his body, preparing him to sustain what he could previously manage only in limited areas.

When Yuan triggers Elemental Infusion again, the technique travels from his bullet-core down his spine and transforms his whole body: his bones become steel, his blood takes on the smell of oil, and his breath carries gunpowder. The power no longer strains him. He briefly touches the Dao before returning to ordinary consciousness, and the experience accompanies his crossing into the Second Coil. The practical consequences are immediate as well as inward: he can use Elemental Infusion at will and perceive the nuances and fluctuations of qi instinctively, without first concentrating.

That greater capacity changes how Yuan fights. During a spar with Orient, the train itself defends her with falling furniture, metal tentacles, and scalding steam. Yuan’s experience and instincts still matter, but the Second Coil has reinforced his body enough for him to keep using Elemental Infusion, leap across a room, and repel the tentacles with punches as he closes the distance. The advancement does not remove opposition; it lets him endure and respond to more of it.

Technique, Training, and Limits

The Coils also shape the acquisition and use of techniques. Revolver’s Elemental Infusion, which temporarily imbues the body with the element attuned to its core, provides Yuan with an early test of the gap between knowing a technique and possessing a body capable of sustaining it. For Gunsouls, Revolver explains, the associated elements are metal or fire. Yuan’s painful initial attempt and later full-body transformation make the rule concrete: cultivation expands what a technique can do by reinforcing the body that must bear it.

The same principle informs Yuan’s training under Arc. While practicing Sniper’s Bore, he reasons that qi could sharpen his vision, rather than leaving him limited by his former assumptions as a Scrap. He learns to create a stable Barrier around his nail and extend it like a rifle barrel, but Arc warns that a shooter needs more Coils to exceed the effective range his present eyes and technique can support. Advancement thus changes not only raw power but the range at which a cultivator can reliably apply it.

At the Fifth Coil, Authority has constraints that shape where its wielder can act. Arc cannot leave the leyline without her Authority becoming unstable, and refuses to rely on a Human Pillar to solve the problem. Orient proposes reshaping one of her cars into a special Barrier, with Holster’s help, to stabilize Arc’s Authority. The episode shows that even a power capable of overwriting local qi is not freely portable: its use remains bound to conditions that affect the cultivator and the people around her.

Masters, Rarity, and Narrative Significance

The contrast between Revolver and Arc gives the upper Coils their scale. Revolver, Yuan’s first instructor, has reached the Fourth Coil and is pushing toward the Fifth, but has not crossed it. Arc is a Fifth Coil Gunsoul, a warrior of a caliber Yuan recognizes as extraordinarily rare; the Stoneskin Sect had no Elder who achieved the stage, and one came close only to rupture their core and die. Arc’s offer to train Yuan therefore represents access to knowledge that even Revolver cannot provide.

That training is tied to a costly obligation. Arc agrees to teach Yuan only if he forms an Unspeakable Vow to destroy Manhattan, any students Manhattan may have taken, and his plans. Yuan weighs the danger against the opportunity to learn from a Fifth Coil practitioner who follows the same Path. In this way the Coils link personal growth to consequential relationships and choices: cultivation opens doors, but the knowledge and responsibilities attached to higher ability are not neutral.

The system also gives Yuan’s later purpose a martial context without making cultivation a substitute for judgment. After Arc’s death, he remembers her request that he defeat the Demigods of Ultraviolence and decides to work toward a better world by ending tyrants and monsters. The Coils supply a structure for advancement, but their deeper narrative force lies in what that advancement makes possible—and in the increasingly deliberate commitments required to use it.
