Coils
GunsoulCoils mark stages in cultivation, but their significance in Yuan Guang’s story lies in more than a rising level of power. As he approaches the Fourth Coil, advancement becomes a process of inscribing a chosen Path into his soul and core, permanently binding him to it. The threshold is both physical and spiritual: Yuan’s breakthrough grants him a dramatically changed body, while the work leading to it forces him to decide what kind of weapon he intends to become.
Cultivation and the Path
The evidence presents cultivation as a progression through Coils, while also distinguishing rapid advancement through earlier stages from the much harder barrier that follows. Yuan is still relatively new to cultivation when Arc tells him he may cross the Fourth Coil within a day, provided he completes the preparation and endures the process. He marvels that he has hardly been a cultivator for a month. Arc cautions that he is not the quickest to advance through the Coils, and that the next obstacle is not simply another short burst of effort: crossing the Authority wall can take years, if it happens at all, and many Elders remain there for decades.
That contrast makes the Fourth Coil a point of commitment as well as achievement. Yuan must choose a Path, and the techniques he has learned cannot remain abstract knowledge: they must be engraved into his soul and woven into his core. Arc explains that this work permanently binds him to the Gun Path. The decision is consequential precisely because progress is not presented as endlessly reversible. Yuan understands that he is not about to catch up to Arc or Manhattan, but accepts the commitment and continues toward the threshold.
Preparing for the Fourth Coil
The preparation begins with Moonburn. Arc explains that surviving the Moonburns clears emotional sludge from Yuan’s qi circuits and strengthens his spiritual awareness. He has begun to hear his soul’s whispers and align his body with it. The trial is therefore not merely a test of endurance: in Arc’s account, it helps make the inward recognition required for advancement possible. She insists that everyone should brave the Moonburns, while clarifying that engraving the soul’s chosen Path sutras is only the first step toward crossing the Fourth Coil.
Yuan completes his soul sutra circuit by the second day of training. Arc then identifies the harder remaining task: he must cycle qi without stopping until his bullet-core fully aligns with the sutra script and perfects the circuit. The metals wagon can increase the amount of qi available to him, and Arc estimates that, with luck and perseverance, he may complete the crossing within a day. But the meditation must be uninterrupted. Any interference could prove disastrous, so he must seal himself away until the process is finished—or he dies. The short projected duration thus conceals a severe condition: once begun, the process leaves no safe room for interruption.
The body must also be prepared for a form specific to the chosen Path. Arc describes Yuan’s iron flesh as a base template, not yet a finished instrument. Engraving an innate technique and crossing the Fourth Coil require customizing that template according to the cultivator’s Path. In Arc’s case, the alignment is with sniper rifles; Yuan’s is with the Gun Path, while Revolver’s choice is suggested by his name. The comparison makes clear that this stage is not a uniform bodily upgrade. The form it produces depends on the cultivator’s chosen firearm and alignment.
A Different Kind of Aptitude
Yuan’s cultivation also exposes a distinction between understanding techniques and knowing how to use them. Mordiggian teaches him to cultivate spirit-fruits and herbs, including Barrier setups that help plants absorb qi. Yuan struggles to stay engaged with the patient, gentle work and instinctively imagines how the techniques might be applied in battle. He begins to suspect that his intuitive grasp of techniques—an ability Gayak has called prodigious—is limited to combat applications.
Holster provides a revealing contrast. She attends Mordiggian’s lessons eagerly, learns his Barrier arrays on her first attempt, and quickly improves their designs to increase qi concentration by five percent. Her success delights Mordiggian and leaves Yuan watching with pride. His response also points to a limit imposed on her: he wonders how much more she could do without her Human Pillar restrictions. The contrast shows that cultivation involves different aptitudes, not just a single measure of speed or strength. Yuan’s route toward the Fourth Coil is shaped by combat intuition and bodily transformation; Holster’s demonstrated skill lies in careful cultivation and refinement.
The Breakthrough and Its Meaning
At the moment of realization, Yuan knows himself beyond instinct. The awareness lasts less than a second before he returns to reality in a new and powerful body, but it gives the transformation a meaning beyond increased destructive capacity. His chosen ideal is a gun that serves a purpose: one capable of justice, protection, and punishing evil rather than death without cause. The breakthrough joins this ethical self-understanding to the physical alignment of his Path.
The resulting form is immense and built around firepower. Yuan grows to twice his former height; his barrel-face lengthens, his ammo teeth can cut steel, and his breath becomes a stream of flames. Fire qi, once a weakness, becomes a strength: his metal body harnesses the blaze, guides it, and uses it to reforge itself. His left arm becomes a minigun, his right a cannon, and iron skulls cover his torso as marks of the qi echoes of those he has slain. Back thrusters give him flight, making the Recoil Fist unnecessary for propulsion. The scene presents the Fourth Coil as a transformation specific to Yuan’s chosen Path, while tying the new body to both accumulated combat and a newly articulated sense of purpose.
The Threshold’s Place in the Story
The Fourth Coil matters because it converts cultivation into a choice with consequences. Yuan’s rapid early progress does not erase the Authority wall ahead, and his completed circuit does not by itself make him an advanced cultivator. Instead, the crossing binds his bullet-core to the Gun Path and gives physical form to the identity he has recognized. Arc’s warning about the years or decades the wall may demand keeps the breakthrough from implying that every later stage will come as quickly.
The cultivation system also intersects with the story’s alliances and obligations. Yuan seeks strength while preparing for the History Road competition and the powerful enemies he expects to face; he believes advancement will make him a more attractive ally. His training is not detached from those pressures. Yet the Fourth Coil’s decisive result is inward as well as tactical: Yuan does not merely acquire a more powerful weapon-body. He comes to understand what that weapon should be for. Later, after Arc’s death, he resolves to carry forward her request to defeat the demigods of ultraviolence and to end the rule of tyrants and monsters. The earlier breakthrough thus supplies a foundation for a purpose that outlasts the training that produced it.
