Dragon’s Breath

Gunsoul

Dragon’s Breath is Yuan’s improvised flame-breathing technique, created when he needed a way to penetrate a trashemoth’s thick hide without exhausting his qi on repeated Recoil Blasts. Its importance lies in how Yuan makes a weapon from the workings of his own body: rather than producing fire directly, he converts the materials within himself into an incendiary attack.

Origin and Method

During his fight with the trashemoth, Yuan’s first punch barely harmed the creature. Its layers of trash absorbed most of the Recoil Fist’s shockwave, while its acidic sludge-blood burned his arm. He concluded that repeated Recoil Blasts might reach its vitals but would drain too much qi; fire seemed a more efficient answer. The encounter called for a method that could get through the monster’s hide, not simply another display of force.

Yuan drew on two precedents. He had seen Gayak breathe flames, a technique Yuan did not believe was innate, and he remembered using magnesium-charged shotgun pellets as incendiary ammunition. His affinity for metal suggested that fire could be approached indirectly, even though creating flames outright was beyond his power. Since his body had become a living weapon, he reasoned that it could reproduce the incendiary effect through its own materials.

To test the idea, Yuan inhaled and cycled qi through his lungs. His study of sutras had given him greater awareness of his bodily processes, which he used to charge the gunsmoke in his chest with qi, saturate it with magnesium extracted from his bones, and heat it until the mixture began to itch. He then exhaled, spitting blinding flames onto the trashemoth’s wounds, and named the technique Dragon’s Breath. The breath was less refined and could not sustain Gayak’s rate of fire, but it transformed Yuan’s knowledge of ammunition into a new use for his qi-reinforced body.

Combat Use and Tactical Effect

Once the flames reached the trashemoth’s wounds, Yuan kept moving along its body while sustaining Dragon’s Breath. The creature’s plastic hide softened and melted under the heat, flames spreading across it as black smoke rose into the sky. The attack’s force came not only from its direct impact: when the trashemoth tried to smother Yuan with noxious fumes, the heat ignited them before they could reach him. Its chimneys began spewing fire, and it tore at its own burning hide, shedding tons of melted plastic.

The exchange gave Yuan an opening, not an effortless victory. He wrapped himself in Black Haze to slip through the trashemoth’s claws while searching for a weakness, eventually locating its core deep within its immense skull. By softening the hide, Dragon’s Breath made that buried target more reachable and turned Yuan’s improvised incendiary technique into a means of setting up a precise attack.

Tactical Logic and Significance

Dragon’s Breath marks a shift from meeting resistance with greater force to changing the terms of the attack. Yuan recognizes that the trashemoth’s defenses make repeated Recoil Blasts an unsustainable answer, then uses the creature’s own fumes to amplify the fire rather than simply enduring its counterattack. The technique therefore matters not as an effortless finishing blow, but as an adaptation that converts a qi-costly obstacle into an exploitable weakness and creates the opening needed to reach the trashemoth’s core.

From Exclusion to Embodied Craft

Yuan’s invention also sits against the limits that had shaped his life before he could cultivate. Born without the potential for a qi core, he had once been denied advancement because sects considered him too old and too low in promise to merit a spirit pill. By the trashemoth fight, he could cycle qi and reinforce his body, but Dragon’s Breath does not arrive as a gift of effortless mastery: it depends on close attention to his own bodily processes and on adapting knowledge he had already gained from ammunition. The technique makes that change concrete. The body once treated as proof that Yuan did not belong among cultivators becomes the material through which he devises a new attack.
