Kullervo’s sword

Kalevala

Kullervo’s sword is a magic broadsword bestowed by Ukko on Kullervo when he invokes divine aid for battle. It first equips him to destroy Untamo’s people and their villages; later, after the ruin of his sister, he turns to the sword once more and dies by it. The weapon thus links Kullervo’s outward vengeance to the final violence he directs against himself.

Gift and nature

Kullervo calls on Ukko for a sword of battle and a matchless weapon, pledging that with it he will fight and conquer even against a thousand armies. Ukko answers the request by giving the youth his broadsword and endowing the blade with magic power. The sword is therefore not merely a weapon Kullervo happens to possess: its origin is a direct exchange between supplication and divine grant, and its stated purpose is combat.

The account identifies the weapon both as Ukko’s broadsword and as the sword of the wizard Kullervo. That association gives it a double place in the story: it carries the force of Ukko’s gift, but its actions and final use belong to Kullervo. The source does not describe the blade’s appearance beyond its nature as a broadsword, nor does it specify the limits of its magic.

Vengeance and destruction

Once armed, Kullervo turns against Untamo’s people. He slays them and burns their villages to ashes. The sequence makes the sword an instrument of collective destruction as well as personal combat: the promised battle is realized not as a contest with a single opponent but as the devastation of a people and their homes. Its first reported use therefore establishes the scale of violence Kullervo can unleash after receiving it.

The weapon’s gift does not end Kullervo’s suffering or bring him back into a settled life. Later, the narrative places it beside the grief for his sister: meadow flowers are described as weeping over her ruin, and Kullervo, named a wicked wizard, grasps the broadsword’s handle and asks the blade a simple question. The passage shows him addressing the weapon before his death, but does not disclose an answer. The sword has shifted from the means by which he acts upon others to the object he consults at the edge of his own destruction.

Final use and significance

After that encounter, Kullervo lifts Ukko’s mighty sword, bids farewell to earth and heaven, and plants its hilt in the heather. He throws his weight upon the blade, spilling his lifeblood before journeying to Manala. The account makes the death decisive: the sword that had been granted for war now becomes the means of Kullervo’s suicide, and the narrator closes his story with the wizard’s destruction.

This reversal gives the object its central significance. The same divine weapon that enables Kullervo’s retaliatory attack on Untamo’s people is present at the end of his life, when violence turns inward. The sword does not resolve the ruin surrounding him; it marks the continuity between his destructive power and his final death. Its brief appearances frame a bleak arc from empowerment in battle to self-destruction.
