Fade Restrictions During Pregnancy

Pleasure

Fade Restrictions During Pregnancy sharply limit pregnant Shadowdwellers’ ability to phase into Fade. The prohibition treats a pregnancy as especially vulnerable to Fade’s dangers, allowing an exception only when an emergency makes the alternative more perilous.

Rule and Scope

The restriction applies to enceinte Shadowdwellers: phasing into Fade is forbidden except in dire emergencies. Pregnancy makes the danger of entering Fade more acute, so an activity that is otherwise part of Shadowdweller life becomes subject to an exceptional limit.

Risks and Rationale

The rule rests on a stark association between Fade and pregnancy loss: almost sixty percent of Shadowdweller miscarriages occur while the mother is in Fade. Its euphoric state is dangerous to Shadowdwellers generally and becomes still more dangerous when a fetus is involved. The figure establishes a serious population-level risk; it does not mean every pregnant Shadowdweller who enters Fade will miscarry.

The Emergency Exception

The prohibition is not absolute. In a dire emergency, entering Fade may be permitted because remaining in Realscape can carry a greater danger: sunlight means certain death for Shadowdwellers. The rule therefore weighs fetal risk against immediate survival, reserving an exception for circumstances in which avoiding Fade would be fatal.
