Shuzenji Spa

Shōgun

Shuzenji Spa is a hot spring near Yokosé in Izu, notable in the narrative both as a proposed stop on Toranaga’s journey and as a place where he comes upon a steaming spring. Its proximity to Yokosé connects it to political plans taking shape in the surrounding region, though the proposed meeting itself is to take place at Yokosé, not at the spa.

Setting and Surroundings

Yabu describes Shuzenji Spa as nearby and recommends it as one of Izu’s best hot springs. He presents it as a practical and appealing destination while discussing Yokosé, a separate settlement in a valley beside the Kano River. The river runs north through Mishima and Numazu toward the sea, and Yokosé stands at a crossroads where the roads run north–south and east–west. Yabu’s account establishes the spa as part of the same regional landscape as a strategically positioned meeting place, without conflating the two.

A Stop Within Toranaga’s Itinerary

Omi proposes that Toranaga intercept Lord Zataki’s party at Yokosé, invite Zataki to take the waters at a nearby spa, and decide afterward whether to turn back, escort, or destroy his men. The plan makes the spa relevant to an encounter whose political and military stakes are centered at Yokosé. Toranaga later tells Mariko and Blackthorne that he intends to go to Shuzenji Spa for a day or two and that they will accompany him there; he also lays out their subsequent journeys toward Osaka, the border, and Yedo.

The Spring and Its Narrative Role

At the spa, Toranaga’s attention falls on a spring. Its water is steaming and sulphurous as it hisses from a cleft in the rocks, and he recognizes that his aching body would welcome a bath. The scene gives the location a concrete physical presence while placing a moment of bodily need alongside continuing political concerns: Toranaga turns from the spring to ask about Tsukku-san, the Christian priest. The spa is thus both a destination on the journey and the setting for a brief shift from the landscape’s restorative promise back to questions of power and religion.
