Shimoda

Shōgun

Shimoda is the southern coastal limit named for Blackthorne’s new fief. It enters the narrative not through a visit or a description of the town itself, but as a destination that extends the territory under his authority and gives Fujiko a concrete task in carrying that authority into effect.

Location and Geographic Reach

Shimoda is placed on the very south coast of Izu. The description establishes the fief’s reach without supplying details about the town, its inhabitants, or its physical features. Its significance here is that it marks the southern extent of Blackthorne’s newly granted territory.

The Fief and Its Extension

Toranaga’s arrangements extend Blackthorne’s fief to Shimoda. The grant is presented as part of the plans being made for Blackthorne’s future: the location is not merely named as a distant place, but included within the holdings Fujiko is told she may take possession of for her master.

Taking Possession

When Fujiko asks whether she should leave at once, Toranaga tells her to stay that night and go directly the next day, not by way of Yokohama. She understands that she may take possession of the new fief and everything it contains as soon as she arrives. The instruction gives Shimoda a specific administrative role in the closing plans while leaving the actual journey and transfer of possession to follow.
