Suruga Province

Shōgun

Suruga Province enters the narrative as a possible reward in a high-stakes negotiation between Toranaga and Yabu. Toranaga raises the prospect of giving Yabu the province, perhaps along with neighboring Totomi Province, but Yabu’s response makes clear that territorial gain has not displaced his feud or his expectation that Toranaga intends to kill him.

A Province Offered in Negotiation

The exchange places Suruga Province within Toranaga’s political bargaining. After an earlier condition had set aside the lives of Yabu’s wife, mother, and son, Toranaga asks what Yabu would make of receiving Suruga and perhaps Totomi as well. The offer presents territory as a possible instrument of alliance or compensation, though the brief passage does not establish that Yabu accepts it or that the grant is carried out.

Yabu’s Grievance and Toranaga’s Offer

Yabu dismisses Ikawa Jikkyu as worthless and speaks of taking Jikkyu’s head and destroying his line, even across successive lifetimes. Against that consuming grievance, Suruga does not register as an adequate answer: Yabu has grown tired of the negotiation and believes Toranaga has already decided to take his head. He declares himself ready and thanks Toranaga for the dawn, choosing to end the conversation rather than continue what he regards as an elegant but futile exchange. The province therefore marks the scale of Toranaga’s offer, while Yabu’s reaction exposes how little leverage it has over his immediate sense of danger.

Wider Political and Commercial Context

A separate exchange with Ferriera shows Toranaga treating the year’s trade as something that can wait, while Ferriera insists that he must sail with the tide. Ferriera has not received the required port clearances and objects to Japanese licensing rules for incoming and outgoing shipping. This episode does not connect the trade dispute directly to Suruga, but it places Toranaga’s territorial bargaining within a wider pattern in which control over political decisions and commercial permissions shapes what others can do.
