Gatsby tells Nick his background story

Gatsby invites Nick to lunch in New York, driving his cream-colored car. On the way, Gatsby nervously tells Nick about his past: he claims to be the son of wealthy Midwesterners, educated at Oxford, and a war hero who received decorations from every Allied government, including Montenegro. He shows Nick a medal and a photograph from Oxford. Though Nick is skeptical, the evidence seems authentic. Gatsby hints that he needs Nick's help with a personal matter.
