a Saturday night in August 1922
Tom and Daisy attend Gatsby's party
Tom Buchanan, suspicious of Daisy's activities, accompanies her to one of Gatsby's parties. Daisy is fascinated by the celebrities and the glamour, but Tom is contemptuous and dismissive. Gatsby dances with Daisy, and they sit alone on Nick's steps. Tom's presence casts a shadow over the evening, and Daisy is ultimately appalled by the raw, vulgar energy of West Egg. After the party, Gatsby is depressed, feeling that Daisy didn't enjoy herself.
