Agnes and Nicole are taken by motorboat to the schooner Nellie J. Banks, captained by Captain Mishimengo. They hide in the fish-smelling hold. The ship has engine trouble and is forced to offload them in an inflatable boat near the Canadian shore. They row through fog and high tides, nearly dying, but eventually make landfall.
