Eldad

Torah

Eldad is an elder of Israel who prophesies in the camp after the LORD’s spirit rests upon him, despite his absence from the gathering at the Tent. His brief appearance tests whether prophetic authority is confined to the appointed gathering: Moses welcomes the activity beyond it and wishes that the whole people might receive the spirit.

The Seventy Elders and the Spirit

During a crisis over the people’s demand for meat, the LORD tells Moses to gather seventy elders at the Tent of Meeting so they can share the burden of leadership. The LORD takes some of the spirit resting upon Moses and places it upon them; when the spirit rests on the gathered elders, they prophesy, though they do not continue doing so.

Eldad Prophesies in the Camp

Eldad and Medad are also among those recorded, but they have not gone out to the Tent. The spirit rests upon them where they remain, and they prophesy in the camp. A young man reports this to Moses, and Joshua urges Moses to stop them.

Moses’ Response and Significance

Moses refuses Joshua’s request and asks whether Joshua is jealous on his behalf. He instead voices the wish that all the LORD’s people might be prophets and that the LORD would put the spirit upon them. Eldad’s episode thus presents prophetic activity outside the central gathering not as a threat to Moses’ authority, but as an instance of the broader participation he desires.
