Terah
TorahTerah, a descendant in the genealogy of Shem, is the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran and the grandfather of Lot. He leads his family from Ur of the Chaldees toward Canaan, but the household stops and settles in Haran; his death there precedes Abram’s later departure for the land the LORD promises to show him.
Family and Household
The genealogy identifies Terah as the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran is the father of Lot, while Abram’s wife is Sarai, who is described as having no child. The family’s recorded relationships therefore establish the household that Terah leads out of Ur, including his son Abram and grandson Lot.
Haran dies in Ur of the Chaldees during Terah’s lifetime. Abram and Nahor take wives, and Terah’s household includes Sarai as his daughter-in-law. The account situates this family within a genealogy extending from Shem, linking Terah’s immediate household to the larger lineage traced before Abram’s story.
Migration from Ur to Haran
Terah takes Abram, Lot, and Sarai and sets out from Ur of the Chaldees to go to Canaan. The family reaches Haran and settles there rather than continuing on to Canaan. The narrative thus presents Terah as the leader of the initial migration, while the journey’s stated destination remains unreached during his lifetime.
Terah lives 205 years and dies in Haran. After his death, the LORD tells Abram to leave his country, kindred, and father’s house for a land that will be shown to him. Abram departs from Haran at 75, taking Sarai, Lot, their possessions, and the people they had gathered; the narrative distinguishes this later, divinely directed departure from Terah’s earlier family migration.
Narrative Significance
Terah’s role is brief but structurally important: his migration brings Abram’s household from Ur to Haran, where the next stage of the story begins. The movement from one ancestral home to another prepares the transition from family genealogy to the account of Abram’s call and journey toward Canaan, without attributing that later call or its promises to Terah.
