Hur

Torah

Hur appears briefly but significantly as a trusted supporter of Moses: he helps sustain Moses’s raised hands during Israel’s battle with Amalek, and later shares responsibility with Aaron for hearing disputes while Moses is away.

Support During the Battle with Amalek

When Amalek fought Israel at Rephidim, Moses sent Joshua to lead the armed men while he went up the hill with the rod of God. Aaron and Hur accompanied him. As long as Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; when he lowered it, Amalek gained ground. When Moses’s hands grew tired, Aaron and Hur placed a stone beneath him and each supported one of his hands, keeping them steady until sunset. Joshua then routed Amalek’s force.

Hur’s role in this episode is practical and collective: the battle’s outcome is linked not only to Joshua’s fighting but also to the sustained support Aaron and Hur provide Moses. The narrative presents their assistance as essential to maintaining the gesture through which Israel’s fortunes turn.

A Place in Moses’s Leadership

Hur is named again when Moses ascends Mount Sinai. Before leaving, Moses tells the elders that Aaron and Hur are with them and that anyone with a dispute may approach them. The account does not describe a particular judgment by Hur, but it establishes him as one of the people entrusted with local responsibility during Moses’s absence.

Together, these episodes place Hur beside Moses and Aaron in two different forms of service: supporting the leader during a military crisis and helping provide continuity in the community’s administration. The text supplies no further biography or account of his later life.
