Asako Bridge

Wasp

Asako Bridge serves as a practical landmark in Mowry’s movements around Pertane: its precise buttress identifies a buried cache, and a later reference to a bridge used for an earlier collection turns it into a point of return in the story’s chain of clandestine exchanges.

Setting and Identification

The bridge crosses a river roughly two miles from the outskirts of Pertane. Its location is specified not just by the river or the town, but by a particular structural detail: the southernmost left-hand buttress. That precision makes the bridge a usable marker in a landscape where a hidden package must be recoverable without attracting notice.

The Buried Cache

Before setting out in his new role, Mowry buries fifty thousand guilders at the base of that buttress. The sum and exact hiding place make the bridge more than a backdrop: it becomes part of the practical infrastructure of his covert activity. The cache is prepared in advance so that the money can be retrieved later.

A Recalled Collection Point

In a later exchange, a speaker proposes a certain bridge where the other person had collected something before, then suggests going to the fifth marker south of it. The bridge is invoked as shared practical knowledge, linking a recognizable place to a specific direction and marker. The exchange does not explicitly name Asako Bridge, but it recalls the same kind of bridge-based reference used for the buried money and underscores how such landmarks enable repeat clandestine transactions.
