Jaimec forest-cave hideout
WaspThe Jaimec forest-cave hideout is Mowry’s refuge in the forest and a place associated with his stored supplies. It offers temporary shelter from the pursuit around him, but its protection proves provisional: the cave is later connected to the loss of his cache and his further contact with Terra.
Refuge in the Forest
After entering the forest, Mowry makes for the cave. He finds it intact and undisturbed, and reaches it with relief, judging it as safe as he can be. The moment gives the hideout a practical importance: it is not merely somewhere to pause, but a place where he can briefly believe his immediate danger has passed.
Warning and Uncertainty
On a later return, Mowry checks the Cave warning ring. He removes it, examines its sensitive crystal, cleans its back, and puts it on again, but it produces no itch or twitch. Hidden behind an enormous tree-root, he considers whether intruders have actually been in the cave. The silent ring offers no confirmation either way; he can only weigh possible explanations, including that a likely-looking hideout may have been searched by an army patrol rounding up refugees.
Loss of the Cache
The uncertainty ends without a resolution about who, if anyone, entered the cave. By then, Mowry regards the question as immaterial: he has lost the cache as well as further contact with Terra. The hideout’s meaning therefore reverses. A refuge that had seemed intact and as safe as circumstances allowed becomes part of a failed line of support, leaving him with only what he carries.
