Futamatao
1Q84Futamatao is the remote place where the Master lives, and its distance becomes a practical obstacle in Fukaéri’s movements between places of shelter. Mentioned in exchanges with Tengo, it helps explain why she does not simply return to the Master and why her next destination becomes a question of refuge.
Distance and Shelter
After an evening with Tengo, Fukaéri says that she has an apartment in Shinanomachi. Asked whether she sleeps there when it is late, she answers that Futamatao is too far away. The exchange establishes the place’s importance through the inconvenience of the journey: distance determines where she can stay rather than serving merely as a point on a map.
A Route She Declines
Later, Tengo asks whether she will go back to the Master. Fukaéri silently agrees that it is better not to go there, but offers no explanation that Tengo can draw out. She again says Futamatao is too far away, then identifies Tengo’s home as another place she could go. The repeated reference turns Futamatao into a limit on her immediate options, while the unexplained reluctance to return leaves the reason for her choice unstated.
