Gravedigger Squadron

Blackwater

Gravedigger Squadron is a combat unit of Grain & Steel commanded by Senior Lieutenant Rocco Swift. The evidence presents it through Swift’s encounters with Roland Horn and his actions amid a fleet-wide Union withdrawal: a small but distinct point of recognition between enemy pilots set against a battle in which ships and Panzerters are being lost and the Union force is ordered to retreat.

Identity and Command

Swift identifies himself to Roland as commander of Grain & Steel’s Gravedigger Squadron. Their introduction takes place while Roland is assigned to the TNV Blackwater, establishing the squadron as part of the opposing force rather than one of Roland’s own units. Swift’s direct warning that Roland should not die before they have a battle to finish makes their antagonism personal without erasing the military conflict between them.

Swift and Roland Horn

Roland responds to Swift’s acknowledgment with a grin: the exchange gives him a break from the immediate strain and the satisfaction of being recognized by an enemy ace. He promises he will survive, then shoots toward the colony opening. The moment does not resolve their conflict; Swift frames their encounter as unfinished business, while Roland’s departure carries the threat of renewed combat forward.

The Withdrawal at the Wreck

At 0745 Colony Time on 2 November 2135, Swift is near the wreck of a military transport above the lower shoal zone in the Lusatia cluster, at Mars Lagrange 9 (Promise). He maneuvers through metal debris with Valentin Fulbright bouncing in the rudimentary crash seat behind him, watching the instruments as the Prosperity & Labor breaks apart under a Tharcian barrage. The scene locates Swift and his squadron’s commander in a battle whose scale exceeds their immediate cockpit: a Union ship is crumbling under fire from a capital ship that has penetrated dangerously close.

Later, amid the engagement, a fleet-wide alert announces that the Union ships and Panzerters are withdrawing. Swift recognizes the signal only after a moment; he has never heard it during a campaign. The order confronts him with the likely loss of the reconnaissance cruisers, even as he wants to regroup with Wheeler and attack the Tharcian battlecruiser. That capital ship is beside the disabled Knowledge & Industry, sending boarding pods into its helpless hull and using lasers against other Union ships. Gravedigger Squadron is thus associated with a retreat that Swift does not welcome: his instinct remains to turn back toward the fight, but the fleet-wide order marks the battle as a worsening defeat.
