Promise Independent Squadron

Promise Independent Squadron is the naval formation placed under Henri Marcell’s command as he is promoted to captain. Its introduction turns that promotion into a concrete operational assignment: Marcell receives a sealed binder bearing the squadron’s insignia and learns that Blackwater will be accompanied by two destroyers and four frigates.

Formation and insignia

Von Braun gives Marcell a metal, sealed binder and tells him that it comes with his promotion; Marcell’s security key will open it. The binder bears the squadron’s distinctive emblem: a circle filled with a sea-green nebula and stars arranged in the rough shape of a cat, enclosed by a gray border reading Promise Independent Squadron. The seal identifies the new command through an image and name before its mission details are disclosed.

Ships and command

The force is planned around Blackwater, but Von Braun stresses that it will not operate alone, particularly given the limited number of Panzerters. Two destroyers, Venomous and Violence, are assigned to accompany it, along with four frigates: Terror in the Night, Thousands May Fall, Man in the Arena, and New Heaven. The composition establishes a broader naval presence around Blackwater rather than a formation made up solely of the ship Marcell already commands.

Mission planning and departure

Marcell has begun planning before Von Braun asks whether he has started. He replies that he will have a requisition list ready by the following morning. Von Braun gives him until the ships complete their refits later that week, then dismisses him. The exchange links the squadron’s formation to an immediate practical sequence: Marcell must turn the new command into a supply and mission plan while its ships prepare to leave refit.
