Jinzhen’s Letter Written in Blood

Jinzhen’s Letter Written in Blood is a private letter by Rong Jinzhen that Grandmother Rong finds by accident and preserves without initially knowing why. While Rong Jinzhen is recovering from renal failure, she returns to the letter between the demands of his care; the narrative presents it as a powerful reason she keeps going, joining his concealed vulnerability to her daily work on his behalf.

Discovery and Preservation

The letter is described as Rong Jinzhen’s secret. Grandmother Rong comes upon it accidentally and keeps it, though she is not entirely sure of her reason. The account does not disclose its wording, so its importance rests not on any stated message but on its presence as a private object from Rong Jinzhen’s life.

The Letter During His Illness

Rong Jinzhen’s illness had threatened his future: he was hospitalized for close to two years, and his Stanford plans gave way to medical expenses and recovery. After his condition stabilized, he left hospital to continue convalescing at home. His care required five meals a day and an exceptionally careful restriction of salt. Unable to find scales precise enough, Grandmother Rong tested dishes with the doctors and then counted grains of salt one by one for his meals.

In brief rests from this exhausting routine, Grandmother Rong took out the letter and looked at it. The account says that each time she did so, she felt more certain that her efforts were worthwhile and returned to her work with renewed energy. The letter therefore recurs not as an explanation of Rong Jinzhen’s condition, but as an object she turns to while sustaining the labor of his recovery.

Significance and Aftermath

The narrative gives the letter a consequential place in Rong Jinzhen’s survival without revealing what it says. It describes Grandmother Rong’s care, encouraged by these returns to the letter, as what drew him back from the brink of death. The following spring, Rong Jinzhen was back in the classroom. The object’s significance lies in this connection: a secret kept from his earlier life becomes part of the resolve that supports his return to ordinary activity.
