Allahabad
DevdasAllahabad serves as a brief waystation in Devdas’s gradual recovery, marking the point between his departure from Chunilal and his later decision to travel on to Bombay. The novel gives the city little descriptive detail; its significance lies in the pause it provides before Devdas seeks another change of place.
Return and Recovery
After packing his belongings and bidding Chunilal goodbye, Devdas returns to Allahabad. He feels much better by then, and the return places him in a period of relative recovery rather than at the height of his earlier illness. The account identifies Allahabad as where he goes next, but does not describe the city or explain why he returns there.
A Temporary Stop
After some months, Devdas asks Dharmadas whether they can go somewhere new, suggesting that Allahabad has become a temporary base rather than a settled destination. He proposes Bombay, a place he has never seen, and is excited enough about the prospect that Dharmadas agrees despite his reluctance. The move carries Devdas’s recovery forward: by the time they reach Bombay in May, he has improved further.
