Condition Bright Yellow
FirestarterCondition Bright Yellow is an emergency alert used at the Shop compound when Charlie McGee is believed to be making an escape and using her ability. Its activation changes the facility from routine operations to battle readiness, coordinating a response across its buildings, perimeter, and grounds.
Trigger and Alert
The alert is raised after a warning that the girl is trying to break out. The officer delivering the message identifies both the immediate danger and the reason for alarm: Charlie is making a break for it and using her ability. Although he cannot recall the changing code term assigned to her, he makes the situation clear over the loudspeaker. Condition Bright Yellow is explicitly declared to be no drill, and staff are ordered to converge on the stables with caution.
Activation and Response
Two combination-type dials, each numbered from one to ten, are used at a console to activate the alarm. The operators set the left dial a little past seven and the right dial just past one. A low, sustained buzz begins at the console and is repeated throughout the compound, making the alert audible well beyond the control room.
The response is broad and immediate. Groundskeepers abandon their mowers and head for rifle sheds; doors protecting vulnerable computer terminals close and lock; and agents move toward loudspeakers while freeing their weapons. Gloria, Cap’s secretary, produces a handgun. At the perimeter, the outer fence’s charge rises from its usual mild daytime level to killing voltage, while the gates between the compound and the outside world slide shut and lock automatically. The bakery truck serving the commissary is caught by a closing gate, which chews off its rear bumper; its driver narrowly avoids electrocution.
Function and Consequences
The alarm is not merely a warning sound: it converts the Shop’s belief that Charlie is escaping into coordinated security measures. The instruction to approach the stables cautiously identifies the immediate focus of the response, while the simultaneous lockdown and arming of personnel show that the alert mobilizes the compound as a whole. The incident also exposes a practical weakness in the system: because the code terms change so often, the officer cannot retrieve Charlie’s assigned term and has to identify her directly instead.
The response reaches personnel outside the immediate command scene as well. Hearing the announcement in the north-house lounge, Orville Jamieson sits down and holsters The Windsucker. Condition Bright Yellow thus signals not only an active pursuit but a change in what people across the facility are expected to do.
