Crane
KalevalaThe Crane is a watchful bird whose encounter with Lemminkainen’s singing makes it an unwitting herald: its panicked flight carries warning across the sea and wakes the people of Northland.
Identity and Setting
The Crane sits among the rushes on a green hillock, counting its toes. The stillness of this small, precise activity establishes the bird before the scene is disrupted by a sound that reaches across great distances.
Encounter with Lemminkainen
The Crane hears the singing of the wizard, Lemminkainen, and is frightened by his songs. The episode gives the bird a direct response to the power of the singing: it is not merely part of the landscape but a listener whose behavior changes at what it hears.
Flight and Alarm
With a horrid, screeching voice, the Crane flies across the broad sea to the lakes of Sariola, then over the hills and hamlets of Pohyola and across Northland. Its cries continue until the people of darkness are roused from sleep. The narrative thus turns the bird’s fear into an alarm that crosses distance and reaches a community; immediately afterward, Louhi hastens to her hurdles.
