Ilisidi–Cajeiri relationship

Peacemaker

Ilisidi’s relationship with Cajeiri takes shape most clearly during their journey aboard Phoenix, where she is both his trusted teacher and a guide through unfamiliar political and cultural encounters. The mission turns a decision made for dynastic security and fact-finding into an education that carries Cajeiri well beyond the lessons Tabini had planned.

The mission and its purpose

After learning that the ship-folk had concealed information, Tabini became suspicious that neither the Atevi nor the Mospheirans had been told the truth about the situation in space. He sent Bren Cameron, who knew humans, and Ilisidi, whom he trusted not to be put off with lies, to investigate. Cajeiri went with them: Tabini wanted his heir to learn the new knowledge, understand humans, and receive instruction from the woman who had taught Tabini himself.

The decision joined political inquiry to personal formation. Ilisidi was not simply accompanying Cajeiri on a journey; Tabini explicitly placed his son in her care as a student. The assignment also put them into a mission whose dangers and scale Tabini did not understand when he sent them.

Learning through encounter

The journey exposed Cajeiri to realities that could not be learned from ordinary instruction. When Phoenix reached the Reunioners, it encountered the Kyo, who intended to destroy the human station because they regarded it as an invasion. Neither the station’s population nor the Kyo had a working model for negotiating with outsiders. Cooperation aboard Phoenix between two species, combined with a skilled translator and diplomat, an elder in Ilisidi, and a child who was the aiji’s heir, helped persuade the Kyo to ask questions and begin discovering what each side wanted.

Cajeiri’s own part in that opening was consequential: a Kyo who came to communicate with the aiji’s young son helped create the first exchange between the sides. The evidence does not make Ilisidi the mediator in that particular contact, but it places her beside Cajeiri as the elder and teacher within the broader effort. His education therefore included not only formal study but proximity to diplomacy and contact with people beyond the societies he already knew.

Ilisidi as teacher and guide

Ilisidi personally supervised Cajeiri’s studies throughout the mission. His instruction is described as both traditional and thorough, linking her authority as a teacher to the political and cultural challenges unfolding around them. The journey also brought him into contact with Kyo authorities, shipboard leaders, and young people from the Reunioner population, expanding his experience through direct participation rather than observation alone.

The result exceeded Tabini’s stated expectation. Cajeiri achieved an education far beyond what his father had envisioned when sending him into space. That difference gives the relationship its particular significance: Ilisidi’s tutelage did not confine the heir to lessons prepared for him but accompanied him into circumstances where he had to engage with unfamiliar people and institutions.

Return amid political upheaval

Phoenix eventually returned to the atevi world. At the moment of its return, Ilisidi learned that Tabini had been overthrown during her absence. The mission thus ended against a changed political landscape, although the account does not specify Cajeiri’s response or describe how their relationship developed afterward.

Within the journey, Ilisidi’s role is firmly established: Tabini entrusted her with his heir’s education, and she gave Cajeiri sustained personal instruction while he encountered human and Kyo affairs. Their relationship connects the private work of teaching to the public demands of succession, diplomacy, and political uncertainty.
